DSG refusing to engage

I have a 2 year old 1.2 TSI Yeti with the 7 speed DSG gearbox (6240 miles on the clock) On Saturday, whilst en route to our holiday destination (2 adults,1 small dog on board), everything was running as smooth as a nut. We started driving up a hill and there was  quiet, phutt noise, a drop in revs and the car coasted to a halt before rolling backwards down the hill. This was disconcerting for me and even more so for the car's following. I managed to roll backwards into a lay-by.

I stopped and restarted the engine but the gearbox refused to engage. I tried manually selecting 1st but it still wouldn't engage

Skoda Assist sent the AA who took us to the nearest Skoda dealer.

I am still waiting for any feedback from the garage as to what has gone wrong and how long it will take to fix. I'm somewhat dischuffed about a gearbox problem on such a young, low mileage car (at least it is still well within warranty). Has anyone else experienced this problem and what was the outcome?

 

P.S. Skoda Assist have been great, arranging the AA, a taxi for us, dog and luggage to our holiday destination and a courtesy vehicle until ours is fixed.

 

 

There is a Service Campaign on some DQ200 DSG 2013-2015.   '34H5',  maybe or maybe not your car needed that, depends when built. A software update because of pressure. leaks and Mechtronic Control Unit failures.

Ever been told about that?

 

Then there are issues with some from 2015 and there is a TPI,  Some have had new Clutch Packs and a Software Update, that is to do with Clutch Slipping.

 

Please report back on what your issue turns out to be.

Hopefully the Master Tech or others are not going to say. Never seen this before.

I have managed to speak to the garage that my car has been taken. I've been told that the failure is in the selector mechanism and that a replacement unit has been ordered. I'm told that the unit is chassis specific (???) and is due to be delivered in 10 days, then the Master Tech will have to either travel to the garage or have the car relocated to a dealership nearer to where he is. So, I have a better idea as to what has failed but not why on such a low mileage vehicle or when I can expect the repair to be completed.

I have downloaded the APP, entered the car's details and learned that it's production date is given as 23 June 2016. It was 1st registered in September 2016. Nobody has ever suggested any update or recall to me.

have a read in the Mk3 Octavia section and see just the recent issues some are having the DSG's.

Got the car back yesterday. New mechtronic fitted and now running as well as ever. Skoda Assist have been great.

 

Questions: 1) Is there anything I can do to minimise the chances of a repeat failure?

2) I was not aware of any advanced warning of failure last time; is there anything that I should be on the lookout for in future?

 

Nothing really, there is no Service Guidelines for the DQ200.

Just be sure to purchase a Skoda Extended Warranty when the manufacturers one expires.

Bit obvious but since its common and very well known for the 7 speed dry clutch DSG to have issues there are only 3 ways to avoid a repeat.

 

Sell the car and buy a manual Skoda.

 

Sell the car and buy a DSG Skoda with the wet clutch box.

 

Sell the car and but a non-VAG product.

Sorry,  but I disagree.  Problems with the 7-speed dry clutch DSG do occasionally occur...but I wouldn't say they were common.  Given the complexity of the system,  and the huge numbers of them that are out there on the roads, it would be miraculous if there were no failures.... in reality failures are surprisingly rare.  In any case,  the instance outlined in this thread had nothing to do with the clutches anyway...its the mechatronic unit ( very similar to that fitted to the 6-speed dry clutch DSG)     that has failed....and that is also a rare event.

Scaremongers we can do without.

Who cares if only 1 in a 1,000 fail of the 2,200 Skoda make a day if you have that one from 2009-2012, or the next ones 2013-2015 or those from 2015 to now.

There are enough failing just on members here, there are members with 3 cars and 3 with DSG issues.

Tell people with cars out of warranty and that Skoda, VW, Audi & SEAT are telling to GTF and pay up if you want them fixed that there are only small numbers with issues.

Looking on here and Honest John failures crop up regularly. But its not like getting a failed clutch on a manual replaced, sorting a DSG will cost a large amount of cash, on an older car it will probably cost more than the car is worth making it an uneconomic repair.

 

Try persuading the owner with a big bill its not an issue.

Of course reports of failures crop up regularly on here and on Honest John..... its what forums are for!  Every problem gets reported,  precisely because for the person with the big bill it is an issue.  When I have a problem with one of my cars,  I air it on a forum,  and the other people who have had the same problem join in and the thread grows.  But that doesn't mean the problem is "common",  and it certainly doesn't mean what is being implied here,  that the problem is widespread and affects such a huge proportion of cars that people should never buy one of them!   So everyone hears about the problems...but I don't bother to write in and say  "I've been driving DSG's for six years with no probems",  so reliability goes unreported.  Its a simple fact that the subjects covered on forums are disproportionately weighted towards problems rather than reliability.

I am not suggesting that problems don't exist.... they exist in some measure for most components and systems in all makes of cars.  So what if 100 people wrote in to complain their DSG had given trouble.... how many DSG's are there out there?  Millions of them.  Well, then,  you might just as well report that millions of DSG's,  the vast majority,  are absolutely fine..... but that would't suit your agenda,  would it?

For the record we are long time VAG owners. Currently ahve the Superb and the Fabia and since 1986 we have had 3 Golfs, a Polo and a Leon. All have given totally satisfactory service.

 

In the office we had Golf TDi 2.0 we a  6 speed wet DSG. When the user left it became a pool car and was abused bay all and sundry and was sold at 150,000 miles. No problems with the DSG.

 

Also have a search on Honest John for problems with the 6 speed, doubt you will find many, certainly far less than the 7 speed.

 

People need to know that they are buying a potential money pit. Being told you are the unlucky 1 in a 1000 does not make the buyer feel better if they were unaware when they bought it the box is made of cheese.

Every problem does not get reported on Social Media or Forums.  Nothing like every owner with issues.

Many have the issues dismissed at main dealerships and told there are no issues.

 

None as blind as those that will not see.

 

There were 5 million or more DQ200 in the World Wide Recall, not including those in Europe not Recalled, just part of the Service Campaign, ]

and not all got that.

Not all those fail though obviously.

 

The failures are in the thousands,maybe tens of thousands Globally, but then VW Group are not admitting to how many.

Funny thing is when the biggest fan boys then end up with the same issues they say are overblown, 

engines or DSG's.  Techs and the likes that end up rejecting cars, getting new MCU's etc and still say, 

not common. 

Obviously not common, but common enough that Dealership Technicians that know the job  do know the issues, just Salespeople and Service Desk staff and VW HQ Staff seem unaware.
