spark plug gap

Featured Replies

got a new set of spark plugs ready to fit tomorrow and have seen the standard gap should be 0.7mm but should the gap be changed with a tuned car?? what affect would increasing/decreasing the gap make to performance?

There's only any point in a wider gap if you have the power in the ignition to support it. I would stick with the recommended gap.

0.7 will be just fine.

Rule of thumb is that you run one colder heat range for each 50hp you gain. If my memory serves me correctly, the gap should be 0.028''. Increasing/decreasing the gap is not recommended, because our cars use coilpacks instead of distributor. Increasing the gap will require more power to create a spark, and considering the "awesome" reliability from our coilpacks, it is better to leave them alone.

....or so have i learned from owning a tuned skoda for the last 6 months

wow, i could have sworn you mentioned something about the heat-range.

i gotta get some sleep. :(

0.7mm=0.028" so everybody is right :)

If anyone is after plugs try here...

i bought some NGK platinum plugs for £7.50 each, on that link kindly provided by the ross-a-tron why are iridium plugs cheaper than platinum ones if they are supposed to be better?

Advantages of Iridium spark plug types

Because of the properties of Iridium, the spark plugs centre electrode can be made with a much smaller diameter than with platinum types (0.8mm), Gold or gold palladium and copper/nickel types. This means that spark plugs potential difference is more concentrated and hence less 'spark jump' voltage is required - this can be as much as 5,000 volts less than with standard plug types. Ignition is improved and less strain is placed on the ignition system. Benefits of improved ignition/combustion include better fuel economy, increased power/acceleration and especially better throttle response.

It is also cheaper to manufacture than platinum.

Got my Iridium ones from the oilman when he did the offer, and can confirm all of the above, they really do make a difference..
