Superb Mk 2 facelift. Front brake pad replacement.

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have a 2014 Superb Estate, CR170 DRG.

I wish to renew the front brake pads, a job I've done many times before on other vehicles - never Skoda as this aptly named superb vehicle is the first I've owned.

Are there any special or peculiar things I should be aware of before I start? eg any special 'black box' settings required to release the brake calipers and so on.

I have the full version of VCDS.

Thanks.

Best regards,

Paul

Hi Kombimad,

This is a really easy job, I did it myself a few weeks ago (pads and discs), the YouTube is really good and lists 3 or 4 tools you will need by size (nothing special, a bigish socket, an internal hex and a torx I think from memory). If you are going to change the pads I think it makes sense to change the discs as well as the labour is the same apart from one more screw and a whack with a bigish hammer - I bought a complete set of pads and discs for £60 delivered, so the additional cost is pretty small.

Good fortune,

Alan

The "set" means 2x disc + pads, for both front wheels? If so, what are the discs and pads made out of, plywood?

I would disagree with this blanket suggestion. There's absolutely no point in forking out for a new set of discs if they are straight and have plenty of life in them!?

No hard and fast rule on whether or not discs can be reused.

Often to properly assess a disc you have to take it off as the inside surface cannot always be inspected easily.

If the disc is in good condition, not heavily grooved or corroded/pitted on the braking surfaces then measure the disc thickness with a micrometer and compare to specified minimum thickness - this is often stamped on the disc hub, or look it up. Work out how much life it has left, no point in using it if it wont last till next set of pads are due. If you've experienced brake judder, that could mean your discs are warped or worn unevenly.

Also depends if you are desperately wanting to save £50-£80 (cost of new discs) in the short term. A little fettling with hammer, hand file and grit paper can restore what looks like bad discs, but it is hard work and how much is your time worth?

New discs and pads will guarantee full braking performance shortly after fitting. Old discs new pads can take a long time to reach optimum performance, depending on how smooth the old disc is.

That is fine by me, we both have our opinions.

In my experience discs and pads both last about 50,000 miles, the labour is almost exactly the same so there is not much point changing one at 50,000 and the other 20,000 miles later when the cost of a complete set is so low. It is just my opinion, you are of course perfectly entitled to think something else.

It was my discs that had worn out (become too pitted), they were still well above the wear limit (which is 22 mm for that car). The pads still had some life in them and the garage quoted about £250 to just change the discs (they were going to put the old pads back in - and I suppose charge me the same at 70,000 miles to change those as well. Changing just the discs seemed daft to me, even before I'd taken out the pads to have a look, and a complete set of pads and discs did cost just £60 delivered (someone seemed to disbelieve that above, so I posted a link - they are pattern parts but fitted very well indeed).

You have got to be kidding me?  I wouldn't fit those to my wheelbarrow, let alone a 10k GBP or more expensive car at the time of writing ...

Well Sir, that is your prerogative.

:-)

No google info or recognisable official UK/European distributor for ABTEX. Just ebay sellers. Not something I would feel comfortable with.

Okay, that is fine by me.

I can never be too amazed at the most crucial part on which people are cutting corners on expense, and that is the wheel in its entirety (it being the only "part" of the car that gets you going and stops you when needed) ... good tyres, brake discs and brake pads are something which one should never consider cheap parts for ... but hey, your car, your life ... a pair of Brembo (one extreme example) front disk pads (for one wheel only) cost something like 40 GBP ... you're free to feel safe with your set, but now your logic of cheapness makes sense (doing the discs and pads at the same time) ... heck, you can do a full regular service on the car for maybe 100 GBP in parts, but that's just crazy IMO

Great info on here guys.

I'm getting some vibration through the steering wheel, up until recently only under heavier braking, but now it's noticeable during anything but the lightest braking.

The current discs and pads aren't all that old, but were replaced by a local garage. The pads are Mintex, but not sure on the discs.

Either way I'm going to change them myself next week. Any suggestions on a good brand of discs and pads?

There isn't a TPS near me in York so I'm looking at a local motor factors, genuine Skoda (local dealer) or an online order via eurocarparts.

I wouldn't normally consider buying genuine parts from a dealer, but I was curious to see if they end up being much more expensive than elsewhere.

Time to do some ringing around.

Looks like I'm going to have to do some measuring, quite a few sizes for my car (2011 Superb CR140 Twindoor).

These eurocarparts prices are assuming a 288mm disc...
