1.8T noisy startup

Featured Replies

Hi everybody

I'm a newbie on this list.

I have had an Octavia 1.8T (not the RS :( ) for about 18 months. It's a great car, but there's just one thing that puzzles me....

I understand that the almost diesel-like clatter on startup from cold is normal for the 1.8 turbo engine, but it makes a very strange noise when it is idling for a minute or so afterwards - as though the exhaust is blowing, accompanied by a high-pitched whine. After that, the exhaust goes back to its normal quiet self and the whine runs down.

My guess is that the waste gate is being held open until the oil pressure and temperature are OK for the turbocharger, but I'd like to know what's [i:24e09bac96]really [/i:24e09bac96] happening.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi and welcome,

Yes it's a bit noisy, catches me unawares sometimes grab a quick look under the bonnet to make sure there's no oil slick :D

I occasionaly get a wheeze if I set off really quickly after starting from cold, almost like she's telling me to wait a minute for her to wake up. All's well a minute later. Certianly compared to other drives, I'm not worried about it, more getting carried away on the motorway 2miles down the road before she's really warm.

As to the exact reason, don't know, but I do know a chap who might...so I'll ask him.

Went for a drive in mine yesterday for the first time in 2 weeks. I had expected the engine to be very rattly because the engine oil had had time to drain away from just about everywhere. However, only the briefest of rattles immediately on startup then all smooth and quiet. :)

I think the odd noises on start up are something to do with emissions control -I believe there's some kind of system which preheats the catalyst, so it starts working faster. Not sure of the mechanism, though!

Phil
