Do i have a paint corrosion issue?

Featured Replies

So i have noticed a small stone chip (well i thought it was a stone chip) on the bonnet of my car, i was going to get a touch up kit but on closer inspection today im not sure if it is a stone chip or not....

the area is only the size of your finger nail but as you can see around the area (that looks like a stone chip) theres like a mark where it looks like maybe the lacquer has peeled/worn away, it doesnt show up very well on the camera and you have to be looking at it from a certain position otherwise you cant see the mark just the stone chip......

Do you think this might be some sort of corrosion as it appears something has entered the stone chip area and got under the paint/lacquer maybe?

I know im being anal as you cant notice it from over a foot away but im just wondering over time if it will get worst if it is corrosion?

The yeti's used to suffer from something similar called zinc inclusion (a paint defect). Two of my previous Yeti's had this dealt with under warranty with no problems.

If you search for this on the Yeti section you should find photos to compare your corrosion.

That first photo looks like acid etching, possibly from bird lime

Oh really, so i can get it sorted under warranty?...does that just involve it going to a bodyshop to be respray or is it more involved as its a corrosion issue?

Yeah but the fact that it actually has what look to be a stone chip in the middle of it kind of makes me think differently, its as it a stone has just chipped the top layer and not gone through the paint and somethings got under the paint and cause it to lift or something. Plus can paint on modern cars still be damaged by bird crap?

Now you've said this i bet if they inspect it thats what they'll use to try and get out of it, unless theres a tail tail way of testing chemically it to debunk that suggest or is it all done by 'eye'?

I take it you never got the car new. Looks like a poor touch up.

That was my first thought

That well may be the case for the stone chip but its whats around the chip that concerns me more, that would have nothing to do with touching up a stone chip surely?

Has the car had a Service at a Main Dealership, or was it bought from one?

There should have been a body inspection and that should be on the system.

Skoda are often refusing paint work warranty claims because they say 'Their Official Dealerships' Approved by them have not been doing Body Inspections.

Anyway, that should have been spotted.  Many would put that down as a 'badly carried out stone chip repair'.

If you want it checked do what the Skoda Warranty says, 'Report to an Approved Repairer.   They can look, take pictures, have someone look, measure the paint in the area.

Check that paint and see if it is a touch up.

Yeah i bought it from a main dealership, ive only had the car about a month and never noticed it before toady when i wash it. Yeah you can notice the stone chip (which could of happened between me picking it up and today when i washed it) but the mark around the stone chip you can only notice if from a certain angle which is odd so that mark could have been there all along but i never noticed it because i wasnt looking at it in the right angle. As i said its a small area and can only notice it if you have your head about a foot or so away anything further and you can really notice it

Guess the worst situation is if Skoda doesnt want to know ill get chips away to do a smart repair on the area i guess if it starts to bother me

I was a car sprayer / refinnisher and did warranty repairs.  IMO best get it checked.

So do i just phone my local main dealer and ask them who their approved repairer is and take it to them? Do i have to pay for them to inspect it and give a report?

'They' are what is referred to as an 'approved repairer'  even if they have no Body Shop, just valeters or contractors / man that comes in a van to touch up cars.

So first report is to a Main Dealership in the UK.

Was the car Serviced yet.  There should be a 'Body Inspection' if there was.

I suspect a man / woman with a touch up touched that up, but just ask at the Dealership they get the Warranty Manager to inspect it, give their opinion,

but first you go to a good body shop & ask if their Painter will look at it, forearmed is 'simply clever'.
