Skoda Octavia Tour Estate 1.9tdi (import from Malta but almost same as Ambiente) 

Symptoms include - the heater not working - just blowing smoke into the car and liquid dripping into passenger footwell. No Air conditioning... re gas didn't work.  Car is regularly steamed up inside with an oily residue on the windows. Scary to drive at night in the colder evenings. 
Any ideas on cause?

Sounds like a broken heater matrix.

Sounds like a broken heater matrix, if it's leaking smoke it sounds like a blown head gasket leaking exhaust gasses into the cooling system which are escaping out of the heater matrix (presumably the over pressure has blown it?)

 

In which case get it sorted before you die of carbon monoxide poisoning.
