Swapping a 245 vRS for 280 Superb dilemma

Featured Replies

I did a similar thing with my old mk7 Golf R with my VW dealer.

They couldn't get any second hand decent stock down here and offered me silly money after owning it for a year and 8500miles :)

The superb will or may depreciate faster than your 245vRS but depends what you want in life.

  • Test driven this afternoon and signed off the paperwork.    Had good look around the car beforehand  and it was mint.    Being prepped and serviced for delivery next Monday.

Why don't you swop your 245 for the 280 then swop the 280 for my 230.  My 230 doesn't have the squinty eyed looking front end.   You know it makes sense.

  • There is one condition though, Dragon Green or the deals off

I'd keep the 245, knowing that you have a rare car. There's nothing wrong with the front end, it's different but I quite like it now.

If you want to proceed, see how far they are willing to take it and ask for some cash or some other incentive.

Sounds like a plan. :nerd:

Swap your current car for one more expensive, bigger, with more power and a higher spec, for free?

Have I missed a couple of pages!? :D

I did exactly that and the Superb was coming back at £1250 more in value.

Both values were an absolute joke mind you.

I do think they’ve got someone lined up for mine. They admitted that having a 245 in stock is more appealing than a 280 as they have a few in already.

Honestly that is the real value and you struggle to match WBAC at dealers with PX. You can get a brand new 280 for around 28K via carwow. "Trade" on a car is about half its list price after a year and not much more if you handed it straight back.

Two completely different cars. The VRS is warm/hot hatch territory the Superb is a very very large quick off the line cruiser. I think most people get a VRS over a Superb because they actually prefer them, not because they cannot afford the Superb, there is little difference in cost with the discounts offered on the Superb £7K+

Agree traded in my 2016 Superb, great motorway cruiser but a bit of a barge going round corners and roundabouts. VRS is an absolute hoot to drive and the boot is nearly as big and rear legroom big enough for my needs. Every time I start the VRS it feels very special and even after 14 months driving it I still look forward to it's lovely, sporty interior to. Very different cars and never seen a Superb driven spiritedly which is hardly a surprise as they are mostly bought for their refinement and comfort, which are missing (not bothered) on the VRS.:inlove:

This whole discussion has me interested as I'm in a semi similar position in speccing up a potential replacement for my vRS next year as I have come to the conclusion that I love everything about it except the clattery old Diesel engine and with mileage dropping it makes sense to get back into a petrol. I am currently torn on paper between a vRS 245 Estate with options and a Superb SportLine Plus 280 Hatch plus options. With discounts the Superb works out only slightly more expensive but I'm yet to drive one as WLTP means there isn't one around at my local dealer and you would have to pay me to walk into the dealers in Cheshire Oaks again (they don't have one anyway) although I can drive, you guessed it, a 1.4 or a diesel. For me the pro/con list is as follows

vRS 245 Estate

+ Great size for the family. Child number 2 has gone out the window for me for various reasons so we'll be remaining a family of 3 but I still need the boot size for various reasons.

+ Brilliant to drive; I do appreciate the way the car drives, it's such a good fit for my driving style.

+ It's still a little cheaper than the Superb (but stepping down to an SE-L Executive Superb would bring them level on price but not a really fair comparison).

+ I can get one in the Rallye Green (I love this colour).

+ My OH is finally happy with the size and looks of the car so it'd be easy to swing an upgrade.

+ I have stuff from my car to put in another Octy (tow bar etc).

- It's the same car I already have; will it feel different enough?

- Annoying that the SEAT and VW get the IS38 turbo with 300 or so bhp and AWD in the most powerful engines from the Leon and Golf. vRS should also be available with these options IMO.

- A lot of the stuff my Octy has is now optional so the cost is spiralling to get these and the options I want on top.

Superb SportLine Plus 280 Hatch

+ AWD, IS38 turbo etc etc...

+ Can get one in the awesome Dragon Green paint (Rallye or Dragon? Both equally awesome IMO).

+ Is different to the Octy but keeps a lot of the stuff I like and adds extra stuff I like too.

+ Bargain for the space on offer; I have to carry adults in the back often and although nobody complains about the space in the Octy, my taller friends would fit better in the Superb.

+ More refined for motorway cruising but I am not going to be doing as much of that going forward so does it really matter?

- Bit of a barge to drive compared to the Octy. Will it put me off? Need to drive a 280 to get a real feel for the car. The 1.4 was surprisingly good, but not for me.

- Has to be a hatch, but it's sort of OK. Prefer the Superb hatch to the Octy hatch and the estate looks far too large in proportion for me, although I love the Octy as an estate.

- Specc'd how I want it's still £39k before discounts and that's an awful lot of money!!!

- OH says it's too big so will give me even more headaches!

The Superb on the Vega's in green looks mean and with some of the same badge and detail mods I've done on the Octy could make a really nice car even nicer to look at, but I'm still not sure. Can't help but think the Cupra 300 4Drive in the solar orange was the one to go for as a good all rounder. I do like the look of a Superb though... Good thing I have a bit of time to decide :)

I’m fortunate enough to have driven and had both cars previously.

The Superb is exactly as you described with masses of pace and space.

As much as I love the 245 I can’t help thinking it’s ugly. It’s a wonderful car and incredibly competent in all areas.

But it’s still dam ugly.

The Superb has beauty on its side as well as performance. Granted it’s not in the same league for handling but my days of throwing cars around are behind me.

I want a quick and comfy motor that can lug me and the family around.

The vRS can do that but the Superb does it better.

Don’t know wether the 245 suspension is stiffer than the original 230. Just the comments on it suggests it’s a hard ride. My 230 estate just isn’t, it’s a fairly soft ride apart from pot holes and really good on a motorway. I do have goodyear assy 3’s which made a big difference and it’s done nearly 40k which has maybe softened it up. Never been harsh though. I regularly jumped out of that into my newer A6 quattro and apart from the leap in quality (can see wear all over I wouldn’t have thought would happen, carpets, trim , seats, steering wheel etc) the ride refinement wasn’t massively different. I honestly think the VRS is a bit soggy and vague for a hot hatch/estate.

I have to disagree. My 220 feels slightly too harsh, ride-wise, for the car that it is.

Maybe I’m getting old, but a slightly bigger, slightly comfier car would be very nice. More power as well though please!

....so, if I was faced with the OP’s ‘dilemma’, I’d swap in an instant.

I love that colour.

Especially with Pan Roof

I have a 220 superb and if a dealer offered me to a straight swap for a 280..... Id be done there instantly lol... I had a mk2 fl vrs before and absolutely love the superb!

I don't know why there is so much hate on the FL Octy.. That was one of the reasons why I bought it.. lol.

Look at it!! it's so pretty!!!

If you want a fast cruiser that is capable of the occasional purple patch then the 280 is the best choice. Swap it and enjoy. Obvs this does depend a bit on what model 280 it is, if its a Sportline then you do get slightly sportier suspension etc which will close the gap a bit to the VRS handling.

If its a sportline then check the extras as the base model misses some stuff like heated seats etc. A lot of people add them but worth a check if it bothers you.

I admit I am biased but my 280 is brilliant.

Me too and  don't forget the spec list.

There is no substitute for power, and as you were previously enjoying 276bhp (Cupra) the 242bhp Octavia would have seemed slow (relatively). I predict it won't be too long before you are enjoying 300plus because that urge needs scratching.

My bones have been around the block a few times too! Suppose I am lucky to have both types of car. Maybe you should try GY Assymetric 3's. I assume the standard 220 had the same suspension so should be the same, if not better as they have 18"s mine has 19"s. The A6 Quattro is very nice and quieter and smoother on the road, but the difference isn't massive, a lot lees than I expected. The 230 is an excellent comfortable motorway cruiser too and certainly not in any way  unrefined. The Focus ST is the way I want a hot hatch, fantastic handling, steering, engine feels much more powerful/torquey normal driving and economical. But it is very firm, as it should be, also on 19"s, makes the VRS feel like a touring car.

I MUST ADD I DISCONNECTED THAT STUPID CHILDISH NOISY CRAP THING UNDER THE BONNET FIRST WEEK. I absolutely hated the car until I did that, I was going to take it back! chalk and cheese with that horrendous thing ditched, MASSIVE difference. I also fitted the sound proofing under the bonnet, maybe a slight improvement with that but nothing substantial.

Funny cos I test drove a demo S3 310HP I was very close buying. Jumped straight out of the 230 into that. Was rather disappointed and didn't buy it as result of the test drive. It wasn't as refined on the road as the VRS, more crashy. The power feel was only slightly better , a little more urge if you floored and revved it about 4K  to red line but nothing to get excited about. I am not obsessed with 4wd, tbh not keen on Haldex, so kept that in perspective, it was that which was robbing the power making it feel not as powerful as the figures suggest. Then I go back in the VRS that was it.  Skoda cheap interior materials aside!  I then ordered a Leon Cupra 300 2WD! But like the VRS's it never materialised due to the WLTP saga, order was canceled.
