Fitting new battery

Featured Replies

This job is usually very easy, but I am just checking. On my 2011 Octavia VRS TSI, when fitting a new battery, is there anything I should be looking out for? I know you have to reset the windows afterwards and I am sure my Bolero radio does not have a code to worry about. There is not some electronics in the car that does not like loosing power for a couple of minutes, is there. I know with some cars you have to make sure there is a constant alternate power source to the car while you are switching batterys. Hopefully a wise member can let me know. Thanks.

The only "gotcha" with the Bolero after reconnecting the battery is if you turn the radio on before switching on the ignition, then it will ask you to input the radio code. Always switch the ignition on before doing anything else to avoid this.

You probably know that the trip and related computer data will have been reset.

Nothing else as far as I know.

Is it an AGM battery? If so it might need coding to the car.

Thanks AG Falco

No mate, looking to buy a Bosch S5 027  battery.

Changed battery for my 2011 TDI recently in the usual way (disconnect the old one and connect the new one) and haven't seen any odd things after that.

I didn't know even about that window reset but I think I've used them without any trouble.

Thanks for the info jevpls, will carry on with the battery change as usual.

You will get the ABS, ESP, and power steering light stay on, just drive in straight line for 100 yards or so and this will reset the lights as the car senses the systems are working ok.

To avoid this i normally have a helper hold the battery cables apart and away from anything and leave the engine running (not safe to do on stop/start system's) been doing this way for years with out a problem as the alternator will keep the engine and electrical system running safely

That's an idea thanks.

Just on the Bosch battery, just check what options you have. Eurocarparts, GSF and my local independent all warned me off Bosch. Their batteries of late have been particularly below par apparently and not up to the same  standard as their other parts and spares.

I fitted a Yuasa battery to my VRS a few months back after a bit of research and advice and it has been spot on, admittedly my old battery was way past its best but the car was much happier with a good supply of electrical juice.

They might not have an offer on anymore but GSF were doing them with over 50% off, buy online and then collect it locally :)

Useful information rawcas, as I have not as yet ordered a new battery. Will look into a Yuasa.

Tanya Batteries seems to be the cheapest, I went with the Exide 067TE 4 year warranty seemed to have the best power to price performance although the other one I was considering was the E44.

Whatever you do don't buy a Lion battery, ECP sell them, mine didn't last a year, got a refund on it.

My local TPS  serve the public okay, as I have bought many a service part there. To late for the battery though patrolman, as I have just ordered a Yuasa battery tonight from GSF at a good price with their code discount.

True. I remember that I had such issues but they disappeared in seconds -  I didn't start even driving and they were gone.

As above, I have have disconnected my battery three times in recent months including battery replacement, and all warning lights went out soon after switching on the ignition. Perhaps later facelift cars have different software.

Two of our cars have ecp lion batteries fitted one recently but the other 3 years ago with no problems, they give the same 3 year warranty as other brands and are competitively priced.

I'm sure they will be fine but mine wasn't and failed within 12 months, ECP took it back no issues but I have had an OE battery last 10 years on a Passat and expect a lot more than 12 months or 3 years out of one so went for a better brand, I would have gone for the E44 but wasn't in stock.

A lot of people buy the Bosch but don't realise the Bosch S5 and Varta E44 are exactly the same battery made on the same production line by Jonson Controls, they are exactly the same specs and warranty, it's just not worth buying the Bosch as you are just paying for the brand name.

The same basic company that made the lead acid batteries for the Jerry U-Boats in the last war.

Just fitted the new battery and no problems. Once I started the engine afterwards, there were 3 warning lights left on, but once I drove a couple of metres, all lights went off again. All I did have to do as expected, was to reset the windows.
