2013 vRS rear brake disk (and pads) replacement?

Featured Replies

I have a 2013 vRS (CTHE).  It is currently having the water pump and associated bits replaced and is getting a service (one month early).

The garage has just 'phoned to advise me that the rear brake disks are rusted and will in due course need to be replaced, along with the pads.

They said that the fronts are OK - probably - I don't know that they  even looked to be honest.

They were incredibly vague about what exactly was wrong with the disks and what the implications were but said that they were only calling with an "advisory".

I told them not to do anything , because I will get my local, friendly independent garage to do the work when they do the MOT.

I am interested to know:

  • How much rear disks and pads are likely to cost to supply and fit?
  • Would it make sense to get the fronts done at the same time and if so, how much is that likely to cost?
  • Any recommendations as to suitable replacement pads - I definitely don't drive like a teenage, boy racer hooligan, I stick rigidly to speed limits.
  • What you would imagine the service guy meant when he said that the disks were rusted (or corroded, I can't recall exactly what he said)?

Going out this morning I walked past a 2nd hand car showroom where they sell exclusively Mercedes and BMW cars.  As I passed I happened to notice that almost all the cars had patches of rust on the disks; I know that if I don't use my car for a few days I also get patches of rust on the disks.  Is my local Skoda Authorised dealer "fishing" for extra chargeable work?

Best have your trusted place check andvrepkacd what is required.   A set of 4 discs Pads for them are under £150 trade.   What are the dealership quoting to change the rears, £199?   Brake fluid due replacing at 3 years then each 2 years.

If  5 years have passed on original discs / brake pads, probably worth doing, Brembos would be reasonable upgrade over stock

Do you mean £150 (trade) for four disks and pads?

I don't know what they are quoting, I will ask when I pick up the car - eventually!

I will bear in mind your comment on changing the brake fluid, good point :)

Why Brembos? Surely this would mean disks, calipers and pads. In view of my driving style I  am not really interested in any "upgrade"

However, thanks for the suggestion ;)

I have attached two (very low quality) photos captured from a video the garage have sent me for comment.

Sorry on a phone but just do a search. Briskoda fabia mk2 discs.   There are loads of threads pictures on Google imaged etc.   A pair of Feredo discs and pads or what ever will be fine. I had about every 18 month changed of discs because of low miles and sitting about cars.   The pads last longer than discs.   Crap OEM discs.

your OEM discs dont look that bad unless warped. Are the pads unevenly worn? Best to ask, you may get away with just new pads.

The skoda fixed price service and maintenance site shows the prices of dealers fitting parts.  Look see the prices,  you can get done for less obviously.

Get new discs sooner than later,  no point doing pads just,  discs are so cheap and take 15 minutes more per side only on rears from just changing pads.   Brake fluid getting done anyway.

Thanks.

How do I get to the "Skoda fixed price service and maintenance site" for the Fabia vRS?

I haven't been able to find it on Google - various dealership sites confuse the issue.

Someone might link it if you can not Google it.   Don't let then do your brakes though.  Why would they call you and not say how much of your money they would be trying to get?    If your brakes work and have cosmetic rust get a mechanic to check not these untrustworthy upsellers.

Next MOT is due sometime in March or April 2019.

I think brake discs are made of cheese these days.

When my previous Superb went for it's first MOT, the robber had me over a barrel with a phone call - "you need new rear brake discs and pads". Not pleased.

My current Kodiaq needed new rear discs and pads under warranty at a year old.  Just odd wear patterns that were not "normal".

I can sometimes drive like Miss Daisy or Lewis Hamilton, so the brakes get a reasonable work out.

Don't let the Stealer fleece you.  Change them at your leisure with your favourite mechanic.

Take a couple of well lit photos and post them, pop it into your trusted garage for a quick looksee, but I'd be inclined to leave them til MOT time unless either of those suggests otherwise.

You'd be putting a new set of discs unnecessarily through a winter otherwise.

If they were in any way ineffective or dangerous, the 'advice' from the dealership would have been much less ambiguous.

Incidentally, the "Skoda Dealer" quoted me £250 to change the rear disks and pads (strangely enough, not in writing?)   I will use that as a baseline for independent quotes.

Where abouts are you located? Maybe someone on here who knows what they're doing, would want the extra £ and is local to you could help and do it for you?

Hi,

Our rear discs and pads were replaced in April this year, carried out by Ingrams Skoda down in Ayr. We were offered a choice of 2 disc/ pad sets. Original Skoda parts supplied and fitted came in at £220. Aftermarket parts supplied and fitted was available at £180.

Ours were heavily corroded so did need doing, a wee clean up wasn't going to suffice. Parks had failed the car at it's MOT saying it needed front and rear discs and pads, and wanted £400 to put it right. We uplifted the car, gave it to our local mechanic, he looked at it, shook his head, took it for an MOT at a different garage and it passed.

He did though say to us that we would be better to change the discs and pads on the rear at some point in the near future.

By the way, just a passing observation as I'm off out, but Seagoat has managed to find an expensive dealer given the quotes he's had for brake work and for water pump/ servicing. No wonder dealers are oft referred to as stealers.
