Concerns over TSI engine in Oct vRS

I previously owned a Octavia sport for a good few years, in diesel form, and loved it.

 

I'm now looking at the vRS. I've read a number of posts about issues with TSI engines. I'm unclear as to whether a 2015 plate vRS would have the relevant fixes, e.g. tensions, etc...?

 

Anyone have any troubles past 2015?

I have been following the Octavia mk3 forum for a few years and petrol vrs is notable for the lack of issues raised.

You must be confusing it with comments from earlier mk2 forum?

+1 aside from a few isolated issues there is nothing like the widespread tensioner issues from the MK2 facelift. It's a pretty reliable and robust unit.

Like a cockroach, very hard to kill.

 

Personally know a guy tuned it up to 430HP (measured), not a single issue, a black sister of my car, we've bought 'em one month apart.

 

You cannot have enough imagination how this car goes... and doesn't object.

You are correct, just didn't know if those issues were resolved in the MK3, but appears so.

The MBQ platform Octavia from 2013 has a totally new engine. The issues with tensioner's was the old 200 HP 2.0 litre. And it was not that common, you just here about the ones tyhat failed not the 100.000's that dont. Vast majority don't have problems at all, I know of many, GTi's etc that have done well over 100000 miles and still run like new, my sons GTi for one. I wouldn't have a diesel ever, again waste of time. Save you nothing with less power, tiny power band, dirty and loads of noise, oh and 10p a litre more for the privilege

Not sure it's a "totally" new engine more of a revised version of the MK2 EA888 surely? (No bad thing).

 

That being said the tensioner issues do seem to have been ironed out by the MK3. 

 

I didn't lose any sleep over the tensioner on my 2010 MK2 to be honest.  

 

I ran that car for 7 years and 70k with almost complete reliability. The only engine issue of note was carbon deposits in the inlet and that was addressed in the MK3 by extra indirect injectors into the inlet manifold I believe.

Not had a single issue with the 3 of my cars. 

 

The only time I had any problems was with a 1.8 TSI and that's the mechatronics on the DSG gearbox which would have cost about £3k to deal with, but RS nothing. 

Bomb proof, no oil used in 30k miles and mapped.

My 2015 vRS engine recently survived the turbo grenading itself - so bomb and grenade proof :thumbup:

Mapped TSI its a bit of a beast, to be honest. I wasn't really sure, but its just kind of opened it up.
It felt a bit resistant before like it wasn't running as well as it could be.

Its actually made a far clearer edge between my TSI and my old Fabia 1 this was meant to replace ( but still have as its worthless, haha). Also gives it a solid lump of torque too so you won't regret the TSI.
It was always faster, but being a heavy big car felt labourious in a kind of way. Now if feels like its had its wings unfurled to fly
If you were happy with a diesel trust me, this will blow your mind with some tuning.
Plus, as proved lately, despite being slightly more thirsty - can achieve 50mpg car indicated if you are prepared to be really, really slow and patient lol

That's put my mind at ease, thanks. Just need to find a used vRS now.

 

Do you recommend DSG if out of warranty, or better with manual?

In my opinion the DSG is better, some will disagree. The DQ250 unit is fairly reliable also as long as it has been serviced every 40k. Mine was 5 years old last month, so I'm out of warranty now and I'm not overly concerned about the DSG box.

I'm sure both are fine.
Just whatever floats your boat, I think I'd be happy with either given the same engine as no matter what its got, its an amazing package.
But very happy with manual, having never tried DSG I wouldn't even know what I was missing anyway.

Ant's of course right..... but the DSG can handle more torque than the ones with a funny wiggly thing and extra pedal :nod:

Currently looking at a TSI myself and panicked reading the title of this thread, but I’m not surprised to learn that the TSI is a solid and stable vehicle. Of note, apart from a random headlight error, I’ve not had one issue with my 93k Mk3 vRS TDI.

 

In that time I’ve not even had one advisory on any of its three MOT’s. Skoda has won my trust!
