Green leaf eco drive

Featured Replies

Has anybody exceeded 92 on the green leaf indicator scale? I drive the 150 TSi ACT and the long time average economy is 43 mpg. I can easily achieve 50 mpg on a longer run but most of the miles I do are around town and I still get more than 40 mpg. My question is can you better 92 on the green leaf scale? I can hit 92 but if I don't really try hard it drops back to about 88 but I have never got better than 92. Also when I have an average of 45 mpg since refill and the tank is 1/4 full, I don't try for more MPG, I treat myself to a bit of right boot, just for the sake of the engine.

From what others have said in this and the other Briskoda forums the relationship between the green leaf value and getting a good return economy figure is somewhat ambiguous.

An awesome consumption return from a particular trip does not necessarily result in the ultimate leaf figure.

Do you have the 1.5tsi engine in your 2017 Octavia? the 1.4tsi fitted to the Octavia was not ACT although in the Superb it was.

@SoupDragon I tried to score high on it a few times, but it was annoyingly annoying!!! You'd be driving along the road at a normal speed (scoring 100 on the instant score), but the minute I'd go through a speed gate and accelerate upto the new speed even at a sensible rate and the instant score would drop dramatically. Not like I was flooring it upto speed.

I've had a look after a few long journeys and despite getting an mpg in the low 60's and it was a score around 85 to 90. That was with the majority of the driving being on a motorway at steady speed and a little bit of town driving at either end of the trip.

From what I can understand about it, it calculates based on the pedal position, acceleration rate and a few other variants.

I wouldn't get too worried over it. Just drive as you would anyway based on road, traffic and weather conditions. Woe betide if you concentrate on it too much and have an accident.

If you know you'll be able to maintain your target speed; accelerating hard is actually more efficient than accelerating gradually, as long as you don't go too high in the rev range. I can't find a BSFC chart for a 1.5TSI so I can't tell you exactly how high you should go...

Good point Tunedude. I think the green leaf meter wants you to change up a gear too soon. The engine will go to eco mode only above about 1400 rpm but the prompt is to change up sooner. The engine is the current 1.5 Tsi, the engine with the nose dive effect on moving off and the engine that gave crazy revs when low speed manoeuvring. The high revs problem was resolved with a software upgrade but I have to drive round the nose diving.

Before I coded mine out I used to see about 90 odd on it, but it’s a DSG so it does the changes how it wants and that’s a lot of motorway work. Round town used to drop to 82 odd.

I tried it once or twice. I have a manual gearbox. As said  above, it is too distracting in normal driving The gear indiction is a useful reminder to get better mpg.

Sometimes the instantaneous mpg in 5th is better than in the demanded 6th- on gentle uphills.

The command to change into 6th as I come to a twisty uphill needs a human decision not to. I guess a DSG would .

change up then change down again?

I once got a 98  score iirc. This was going downhill from Buxton on the A6 through Bakewell and on to Rowsley. When 70mpg was also indicated.

And @themanwithnoaim's leaf has probably turned brown and fallen off...

PIFFTAKING as usual get 81-83 normally but didn't look after 10.6MPG at Snetterton. Bet even NOAIM has ever got that low.

I don't think I've ever seen over 80. Despite 65mpg in a 1.0 Petrol...

Oh yeah baby 9.3mpg is my all time lowest in the vRS

A few times during the summer I saw numbers between 92 and 96 for a short while, but if you for a moment doesn't follow the gear indication, it drops fast. Even when the fuel consumption is not changing visible, the green leaf score drops, just by waiting 20 seconds before changing gear. Fuel consumption in cases of green leaf scores over 90 was between 4.2 and 4.5 liters/100 km (57-61 mpg).

The car is a model year 2017 Fabia combi Joy 1.2TSI (90hp) and manual 5-gear, so different car, but similar 'leaf software' I guess.

Every time I see really good mpg figures and start to feel glum, you come along and cheer me up no end Tony

Even if your overall is still a tad better'n mine.

What is this Leaf that you are all going on about ?  I have a load on the lawn at the moment if that counts - LOL

Mr Brettiviki you are doing well. I am pleased with my mpg, about 43 long term. I used to watch the green leaf but I don't think it always tells the truth. Here's a thing, I always thought the green bars that show your greenness appeared from the right as you drove along and travelled to the left on the display but since I put the OP up, I've been looking more closely, making sure I am not in danger of a collision, and suddenly I realise that the bars appear at the left  travel from the left towards the right. I've been reading the green display wrongly for a year. Mind, it doesn't make much difference.

I've averaged just over 48 mpg over the last 4700 miles (the 50mph limit on the A1 past the Metro Center is a pain but helps mpg!)

Have you spoken with Silbury re the nose diving?

recently took 10 bags out to the tip of the things... gotta get em off the lawn before it snows... that was three weeks ago, hasn't snowed properly yet....

;)

and yes, the consumption from the 1.0TSI is acceptably good :)

I don't pay any attention at all to the Green Leaf screen. It's part of the Entertainment system and should've been integrated with the media button :D

The only true measure for me is Brim to Brim refuelling.

ps - a tip I learned about accelerating was to get up to speed promptly if you want to make progress. It works. Try it and watch ditherers disappear in your mirror. And it's not about speeding.

Yesterday after reading this thread, I checked my green leaf stats between Hythe and Ashford driving to work. Despite achieving 66mpg, I only achieved 82/100. Braking, acceleration and being stationary are all key factors in a reduced score! Oh and changing gear!
