235's on the rear, 225's on the front.................

Featured Replies

I'm in the market for some front tyres soon but the rears still have loads of tread on.

I'm thinking putting 235/35X19 on the rear and moving the 225/35X19's to the front.  Will this affect the TPS, throw up warnings ?. The rims I have are 7.5 X 19. Will a 235/35 tyre be OK on a 7.5 rim or stick to the 225/35.

The tyres I'm thinking of a Faulken  FK 510 235/35X19

Thanks

They'll be fine, just reset the TPM once fitted.

Now to wait for the argument to begin...

...they will, absolutely, be fine.

Actually there will be 2 arguments, 1 about the tyre sIze and 1 about tyre make.

Thanks for your input

As long as you're matched per axle I wouldn't worry. Having used FK 510s on my Mk2 TFSI before swapping to PS4 though, I wouldn't entertain using them again, they really struggled to put the power down.

235 will just fit on a 7.5J wheel, I think its the maximum recommended size.

no, actually I'd be more worried about ESP. Different rotational speeds is not a good thing.

As long as your driven wheels are the correct size as programmed you wont have any problems with the electronic assistance systems.

In this case: 335/35 R19s have a rolling circumference of 2032mm, 225/35 R19s have 2010mm, 22mm difference, its like 1.1%. The rolling circumference will change with differing tyre pressure and temperatures, the assistance systems wont be that sensitive.

I'd be more tempted to throw the wider tyres on the front. I'd rather there was the chance of having lift off oversteer than having understeer.

As well, I'd be more inclined to put a set of Michelin PS4S's on. I appreciate they're a bit more expensive, but they do get good write ups.

@Auric Goldfinger - if you have the Xtreme 19"s on, then 235/35 R19s should be absolutely fine on all wheels. Started on Pirelli P-Zero 225/35 R19s, then swapped old rears to front, put Goodyear Eagle F1 AS4s on the rear @ 235/35 R19 with zero issue, and increased kerb protection.

Recently swapped old 225/35 R19 fronts to Michelin PS4s @235/35 R19s on advice from a few more petrolheads re: increased torque grip and cornering (which is what you want on a 300+ BHP FWD unit...). Noticed a significant difference in lateral and fore-aft performance - like pulling away etc., noticeably better than 225/35, although that could be a direct improvement of Michelins over Pirellis.

I get the decision to swap old rears to use on fronts to get value usage, but my longer-term strategy was always to get 235/35s all round. If you do decide the same, you should have no issues at all - in fact the only minor thing I hit was the garage calling me up to check if the sizing was right (and I confirmed it was).

Best of luck and enjoy the better sizing!

I had those exact tyres in that size on my Scirocco R and I liked them. If you try to put the foot down on a bend then there is a chance that they will let go but but that's the same on any tyres on a powerful car. If you're sensible about the capabilities of your car they are a good tyre. A lot of the Golf R guys round my way use them as well. The Scirocco was 280ps and the Golf Rs are 310 so I don't think you should have any issues.

Did you compare to something like the PS4 or EF1 ASM3 on the same car? When I dumped my 510s for PS4s it was like a different car such was the massive improvement in grip.

They replaced a set of Pirelli P Zeros which were about the same to me. I did not hang around in this car which was part of the reason I had to sell it. It was ridiculous what the car was capable of and I didn't notice any loss of handling

Would make sense, i'd peg P Zeros about the same level but more expensive because they say Pirelli instead of Falken on the side!

I doubt you will have any significant issues but personally I don't even like different makes of tyre on different axles.

Yeah, that's the route I followed 235's (new tyres) on the rear then, moved them forward when replacing the worn out fronts (original rears).

BTW Michelin PS4S are the dog dangalies of performance tyres right now & they are currently £266 a pair fitted at Costco.
