Skoda Connect - How much data?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

We have just placed an order for a Karoq SE-L, 1.6 TDI in Meteor Grey, and are expecting delivery soon as the car is currently in a showroom. While I excitedly wait, I've been trying to piece the info together on Skoda Connect - I think I know the answer to this given all the threads on it, but is there a single place with a PDF or something that explains what is standard and what is not? I understand that Care Connect has to be specified at build time and that we won't have that... that's fine but what about the other bits like remote access?

Also, how much data do you find it uses? I'd probably go for a data only sim deal, but have no idea how much data gets used in a typical month etc.

Thanks,

Steve

Remote access seems connected to Care Connect, so that might be out of the window.

I also thought it connected via your own phone, so using that data. Quote from the Android app:

Does your car have the ŠKODA Connect online services package active? Download our app, which will allow you to communicate with your ŠKODA car directly, be it via a smart phone or smart watch.

Thank you for the info! I'm undecided whether I should use my phone data, as I have two phones, so while I can pair two phone for calls etc, I often only have my company phone with me - If the apps use little data that's fine, but I don't want my employer questioning GB's of data use that the car has consumed so I was thinking about a data-only sim deal.

You don't say what type of Infotainment unit you have specified, however from my experiences with a Amundsen then the data usage that the car takes is very small.

I have a small (500MB) data contract with a well-known provider that is a subsidiary company of BT and I setup my phone to create a hotspot that my Karoq then connects to for the Destination updates and more importantly live traffic updates.  What I have found, based on a typical 200 mile / four hour journey is that the Karoq seems to take no more than a couple of 2MB of data to provide the traffic updates and allow me to sneakily check the weather at the destination.

The Columbus that can connect to the Internet directly via 3G/4G does need its own SIM to do this, however I would be surprised if the data usage is massive given the units have similar functions (e.g. both Nav).

Care Connect is different and requires a box to be fitted at the factory (aftermarket units are available but hard to find) that connects into the CAN bus and allows you to command the vehicle via the app in the smartphone, from what I have seen you connect to the cars wifi and can do all sorted of clever things, etc.  Mine did not come with this fitted and to be fair I've not missed it.

Hope this helps?

The only instance I could imagine it using lots of data would be if you used Google Earth constantly via the headunit, but not quite sure why you'd need to if you use Carplay / Android Auto and their own mapping/sat nav options.

You can keep an eye on individual data usage in both Android and iOS so would be worth keeping an eye on to make sure it's not using daft amounts for minimal benefit.

Thanks both of you, that's very helpful - I haven't specified Care Connect and am not really interested in that aspect of it so I think I will get away with using my company phone which allows around 2GB a month data use.

Reading this I think a dedicated sim is out of the question anyway, I thought the Amundsen had a SIM slot but apparently not, but given that data quantities we're looking at that is fine!

Google Earth doesn't use too much - I used about 500 MB on a two week trip to France where new data was being downloaded most of the time. If you are using the same roads again and again I think the system buffers so you don't download the same map repeatedly.

I have a SIM card from 3 with 1.5GB and more calls/text than I could ever use at £5 per month - the Karoq even has its own phone number now!!

  • 1 month later...

Just spotted this FREE monthly 200Mb data SIM deal from Three which may be of interest to people - especially if you have the inbuilt SIM reader in your car.

BTW it should be more than enough for the Skoda online traffic updates.

No reason why you cant just download offline google maps to you phone and then not use any data.

I do this each time I go to Spain and use a hire car and it waorks great.

alternatively there is Here WeGo(previously known as Here Maps). The free app lets you download maps from over 100 countries with turn-by-turn voice instructions, absolutely free.
