'Brake Covers'  that is likely some muppet that drives a desk / phone / computer misunderstanding ' New brake discs have a protective coating' which needs wearing off while 'Driving 

in your new car'.   Use you new brakes carefully until the newness and coating is off the pads and discs type thing.

As is kind of covered in the Owners Manual.

I’ve seen some “upmarket” cars being delivered with white plastic discs behind the wheels to stop the brake dust marking the wheels during delivery. Indeed, the wheel would have to be removed to take these dust shields out. I guess they reuse them along with the white car covers.

 

VAG do use them, but I’m not sure if that comes down to Skoda level.

I've not got a clue, service dept said they may have forgot to remove them so sounds like they may, but I've learned not to trust what service dept say, lol, on another note, cars got to go back for new number plates as the rear one is covered in bubbles lol, it's stupid little things that are really starting to upset me now, good job I really like the car,

Part of the problem, due to the manufacturers chasing of improved fuel consumption figures, is that gearing is very high nowadays and the software wants to get you into the higher gears as soon as possible, quite often too early, before the engine is making real power and hence the lack of performance. 

 

Putting into Sport mode (by just pulling the selector back) will help as it will then hold onto the gears longer which will improve acceleration.

 

Apart from the lack of grunt I found the car very pleasant to drive.

Sorry, ignore this, I thought from an earlier post when you mentioned trying Sport that it was a DSG. I see now that was via settings and it is a manual.

 

But the high gearing is still part of the problem and so you need to rev it a bit more before changing gear i.e. drive it more like a petrol engine! Despite what the figures say diesels aren't the torque monsters that they used to be and a 1.6 in quite a big car with high gearing is never going to perform that well.

Thanks for the reply, I've been light footed so to speak as with new cars I try not to rag them for the first 1000 miles but I've got a 1000 mile drive in December 95% motaways for 8 hours with a few Pitt stops so that should bed the engine in lol

Driving at UK NSL's of 70 or 60 mph would never be ragging it.

The Owners Manual gives you advice on 'Driving In' / Running  in, the same advice as has been given since Adam was a Boy, or Henry Ford was.

 

Brakes, Tyres etc need Run or Driven in, and engines and gearboxes need care and attention, or as Hire Cars, Demonstrators, Fleet /Utility Company cars are driven as they are from day one. So might Mobility and Private cars be driven as a car.

Is your 1.6 TDI a new WLTP Approved one with SCR uses AdBlue. (needs AdBlue) ?

How many miles range is the AdBlue showing if it is one of those?

Yeah mine's a brand new my19 with the adblue , which is weird as I know what the range should be on adblue and it's showing 3000 miles range , car only has 550 miles on the clock,  as for the other post, my idear of ragging the engine is to red line it in gear changes to get the most power and speed at once, which is a no no, even c.control should not be used at a stable speed for first 1000 miles , so they recommend , to give the engine time to work in,  that I learned on a training course a while ago and was backed up in the manual,

We picked up our new 1.6 SE-L, manual, (MY 2019) last night and it seems pretty identical to our out-going Yeti 2.0 110 manual - In sort mode I'd say it pulls a bit better than the Yeti did - Even in Eco mode, I wouldn't say it is significantly slower.

Hi Steve, thanks for the reply, maybe it was just me, I'm light footed with new engines and now I've taken it along the motaway and put the engine to the test, I think it's a case of I was just not pressing the gears hard enought,  if ever you work out a good mirror link app let me know lol,

Ha yeah, I'm still working on the MirrorLink etc.  I like the Skoda Connect, but remembering to switch on the phone's hotspot each time is a pain. I have an old MiFi box in the office, so I may put that in and see what its like.

I have not noticed a lack of power from the 1.6TDI engine in mine.  What I have noticed (it is a DSG) is than in ECO mode the acceleration seems to be retarded by the ECU meaning that is does not pull away quite so well.  I have learnt to simply flick the box into sports mode (pull level back once) then once the acceleration to the desired speed is complete flick it back into ECO (pull level back again).  If I am not in a rush or the acceleration is not time critical then I just accept that the ECU is controlling the car and I am just kindly holding the steering wheel for the computer!

Euro 6 1.6TDI manual without SCR has different Engine Management from the post WLTP 1.6 TDI manual.

 

Euro 6 1.6TDI DSG pre WLTP different again from Post WLTP.    Apples and Pears or Oranges and Lemons. 

 

It really mater that people give a clue and say when their car was built if people are to know if similar for comparisons sake.

Sorry Offski I forgot that WLTP messes with the ECU, mine was registered at the end of March-2018 so is pre WLTP and according to the VIN is MY18

I have the 1.6 SEL TDI which is now two weeks old. It is no speed machine particularly in ECO mode where it's lethargic. Normal mode is fine for me allowing reasonable progress. Sport mode makes HUGE difference completely changing the cars performance however MPG suffers. I've settled on normal mode and get 55-65 mpg running around the doors. Did 700ml round trip recently on motorways and drive ability was fine. No issues however 6th gear very high pulling 2000rpm at just under 80mph so drop to 5th required for overtaking or long hills. 57mpg on this trip at 70-80mph. Delighted with vehicle and no complaints so far.
