KESSY Question

Featured Replies

Just taken delivery of a 1.5Tsi SEL fitted with KESSY.  During the "handover". the salesman explained the use of KESSY and stated that "if you walk away from the car, having forgotten to lock it, and with the keys in your pocket, the car will lock itself after a certain time delay".  Well mine doesn't!!  Should it, or has the salesman got it wrong?

Hmm, It's not something I've heard of. I'd check the manual.

Certainly doesn’t on my 2016 Superb with Kessy. If it did, it would likely be an option in one of the menus (the one about locking and unlocking) but if it’s not mentioned I’d guess it’s not designed to do it.

As I understand Kessy.

You walk away with the key, the car will lock itself.

You come back to the car with the key, it will unlock itself when you touch the handle.

Not on either my 2016 Superb nor my sister’s 2018 Karoq. Well the second bit is correct for unlocking, but it doesn’t lock itself, you have to touch the right bit of the handle.

Thank you all for your helpful replies. Mine seems to work as it says in the manual i.e if the key is within 11/2m of the car, gripping either front door handle will open the car.  Then on leaving the car with the key on the outside of the car, touching the little slot on the rear of the handle causes the car to lock.  Otherwise the car remains unlocked, no matter how far away I move from the car nor after any time period.

By default settings, if you don't lock car manually (via kessy by touching handle or via remote key fob) it will NOT lock automatically.

There is no ioty to change this behaviour in standard infotainment.

There is a VCDS adaptation to enable auto lock. Look on net.

Yet, there is a caveat that autolock MAY in some situations wrongly detect absence of kessy key and lock car with keys inside! (for instance, there are reported cases of kessy mistakes when keybis inside bag with phone or other electromagnetic interfering obstacles etc) Thus default behaviour is not to allow autolock.

So far KESSY is working absolutely fine, had no issues with it and see no problem to touch the handle if it's needed. So you just need to get used to it.

The car autolocks itself if the unlocked doors have not been opened during the next 1-2minutes (I think), but that's not the absolute autolock function.

Anyway, Congrats for your new Karoq!

Thank you phd-agne. I’m quite happy with KESSY and it’s use, but mine certainly DOES NOT LOCK ITSELF if I walk away without first locking it and I cannot find anything in the manual that says it should. Previous replies also confirm this, despite of what the salesman told me

Moral is: never believe what a salesman tells you!

Mine works as described above...no auto lock.

Despite initial concerns I like it. I now leave the keys in my pocket and rarely use the key blipper. It's increased my excercise....I now walk to the car to lock or unlock rather than doing it remotely.....titter...titter!

If you have the locks programmed to only open one door when placing your hand behind the handle, if you place your hand down twice it will open all doors.

More importantly, do your interior lights come on when you turn the engine/ignition off using KESSY?

They have on all my previous Skoda's, with regular keys, when you pull the key out of the ignition.

I'd sacrifice my ability to lock the car to be able to see when I get home :D

I've just remembered that mine definitely doesn't. When I go up to my stables I usually leave the car open as I'm always running backwards and forwards but I always keep the key with me or a few yards away from the car by the stable. However, and I haven't tried this, when I unlocked my Yeti with the key fob, I would have to open the door within 30sec otherwise the car would automatically lock itself again. I expect the Karoq has a similar feature.

Thank you Icey Lady et al..  I think that I now have the definitive answer, albeit from another salesman, and I will summarise below.

The car can be unlocked and locked using the press-buttons on the key fob.

If using KESSY, the car is unlocked when the key is within 11/2 metres of the car and the door handle is grasped

If using KESSY the car has to be locked by touching the sensor on the rear of the door handle

The car WILL NOT LOCK simply by walking away with the key.

The key cannot be inadvertently locked in the car.

If the car is unlocked using KESSY, but the door is not opened shortly thereafter, then the car will lock again.

Hope that helps, but standing by to be corrected. This did after all come from a salesman.

I believe that the car will only lock itself again if you unlock the door and for some reason do not open any door.

As above, there’s no known auto locking otherwise.

This (bold) also applies if the car is unlocked using the keyfob buttons too.

This is also the case with non-kessy Karoqs

I always use KESSY on my Octavia rather than manually locking the car. The other evening I went to get takeaways for dinner. I parked right outside the place and so left the car open and unlocked while I went inside to wait. When I returned to the car it had closed the sunroof and window and locked itself.

I was quite surprised because I've set the menu autolock option to 'never lock'.

My Superb 2 did that. I believe it was because it rained while I was in the house. I have rain sensors and the option to auto close when rain is detected was on.  It had also locked the car. Could that have happened?

No I don't think so because it was a warm, sunny evening without rain/showers.  Also the Opening and Closing Setup menu in my car doesn't show an option to automatically close in the rain, so it's not a function that has been enabled (unless it exists as an option within some other menu that I haven't discovered yet).  I don't actually know why that option isn't there, since it appears that UK-market cars have it and my local Skoda dealer said that NZ (and AUS) cars are largely the same as UK cars.  Perhaps it is controlled by some configuration setup that differs between markets..?

Newbie so this may be a silly question but when I approach the car with the key in my pocket I can unlock it by clenching the drivers door handle. I can then open the door, close it again and lock it by touching the sensor on the handle.

However..... when I open the door using the sensor and drive the vehicle, when I get out I cant get the door to lock by touching the sensor. Is this normal? Am I missing something? I lost the will to live trying to understand the manual.

Make sure that only the sensor is touched and nothing else.

Thankyou John that was the problem.

And dont forget, by using the keyfob to lock the car then (within 10 seconds) touch the sensor on the door handle will ensure the car can be unlocked only by pressing the keyfob again. This, I am told, prevent would be car thieves using their hightech gear from transmitting the keys signal to the car when the keyfob is in the house and the car is on the drive. If I am wrong, someone let me know!
