4th Windscreen in 4 years!!

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I have had my MK3 VRS for around 4 years now, and although it gets driven a lot (nearly at 100,000) We take good care of it. However over the 4 years it has had at least 3 new windscreens all replaced due to cracks. And today my wife messaged me to say we have another crack in it today! This will be the 4th windscreen in 4 years. We are obviously covered by insurance, but I just wanted to see if anyone else had experinced an unusal number of windscreen replacements over the course of ownership of their Skoda (Octavia or otherwise).

I wondered if for some odd reason they were more prone to them? Or is it simply bad luck?

According to invoices, my car is on its second screen and it’s now cracked in 2 places and due to be replaced again in January. It’s a 2014 also with nearly 100k on the clock.

On my Mk2.5 I had 3 in 2 years.

I got a cracked screen and had it replaced and a stone took it out again 3 weeks later.

I was really hoping my Mk3 would be less prone.

Mk2, Mk2.5 and 3 x Mk3, no windscreen issues (so far). :)

Is the windshield same on LHD and RHD versions? Looks symmetric to me.

Out of interest are they heated screens as i had four replaced on my older Mondeo in five years and the fitter told me that heated screens were weaker because of the elements in them.

Mine is heated yes

Mk 2 no replacement screen - mk 3 one - mk 3 facelift 1. Both stone chips - both times I saw the stone coming and just had to watch the damage done - luckily last one was able to be repaired.

The worst screen damage for me was losing the rear glass. Went out to the car one morning to find a stone right in the middle of the glass. Just touched it and all the glass fell in - this was on the Octy Mk2.5

So started the search for new glass. Spoke to my insurance preferred window replacement firm, couldn't get anything - my glass needed the diversity aerial etched into it. Spoke to my local Skoda dealership who told me they could deal with my insurance if I liked....only problem, they couldn't get the glass either. There wasn't a single rear glass in the country for my car.

I had to drive around with plastic and sheeting over the back window for about 2 weeks while they shipped in my replacement glass.

No not lose the back window, it's not worth it!!

Mine had a replacement at 3 months old! However it was a falling roof tile from our (brand new) house that went through it...
