Chewed cable (with photo)

Featured Replies

Hey all,

So the engine light came on whilst leaving the house today.

i popped the bonnet after arriving at the shopping centre and it appears a rodent has chewed through one of the cables (photo attached). Does anybody know the purpose of this cable?

Cheers

Information on make, model, year and engine would help, then this request could be moved to the appropriate forum.

Hi - I'm back home now. It was -3 when I took the photo and made the post, so sorry for the lack of info.

Our car is a 2016 Fabia, 1.2tsi.

I believe the chewed cable connects to the EGR.

Thanks!

Lambda sensor, you will need to buy a new one I'd think and it will come with all the cable form so you just need to unplug the old cable. B1 S1.

What a really nasty little **** to do that, all I've ever had to date is chewed foam parts!

Edit:- I don't think that these engines have nasty things like EGR valves.

Looks like an oxygen sensor to me.

You're right, it's definitely a lambda sensor.

I live in the Czech Republic, and during the harsh cold snaps small animals like to seek refuge in warm engines. Weasels are particularly problematic as they love to gnaw on cables:

Thanks for the help!

So far I've only ever had trouble from field mice, but they can cause enough problems if left to amuse themselves, leading up to winter this year, I've caught/killed a total of 6 in my garage.

Traps are baited waiting for the next "family" to arrive, maybe a bit cruel, but it is either them or my cars and everything else of value in my garage, they do like to chew things.

Edit:- there used to be a Mink farm quite near where I live, so as usual where there is or was a Mink farm, some will have escaped. I thought most of the Weasels used to be on the board of VW AG, so maybe your one has been sacked and now has time on his hands?

The amount of wiring in that engine bay and it just happens to be possibly the easiest, most accessible component to replace.

Could have caused some right headaches if it had chewed through something hidden away
