Gunk in engine! Should I be worried??

Featured Replies

Hi

Occasionally I get a bit of 'mayo' under the oil filler cap but i've always just put it down to condensation, but yesterday I checked the cap and there was more than usual. Having suffered HGF on my last car I'm a bit concerned, does anyone think this is too much, is it signs of HGF or is still just condensation (bad seal on cap maybe?)?

There is no sign of oil in the expansion tank and it doesn't look like I'm losing any coolant, also the car seems to perform ok no obvious loss of power.

Put my mind at rest if ya can please :)

I had the same problem with my Fabia vRS..........It's just the cold weather..Somtimes it's there somtimes it's not......... don't think it's anything to worry about..

Hi Mate

I think it is call Emmulsification.

It is normal and I have seen quite a few posts on this just lately.

Just keep an eye on your oil level , service regulaly and use good oil.

All then should be ok.

Enjoy the car mate

It is water in the oil. It could be condensation, or it could be something much more of an issue. Might be a good idea to change your oil after flushing the system and monitor it.

Often caused by lots of short journey's and not warming the oil up enough to burn off condensation in the engine.

yeah I know it's emulsified oil and water I'm just worried (naturally as i've had HGF on my last car) that it's a hint at something serious, or it could simply be condensation coming through the filler cap (I do take it off a lot) cos of the cold mornings. I do very short journeys durring the week, less than 8 miles at a time.

If it helps there is no sign of mayo further down the hole where the engine actually is, it's just on the cap and that bit around the neck, so perhaps that does suggest it's condensation from the top, rather than coolant coming into the engine.

I cleaned it last night and checked it tonight when I got back from work and it hasn't come back, I will make sure to clean it before driving to emma's on friday as that's a 240mile motorway trip, i'll then check it at hers. Hopefully it won't have come back.

What engine is it?

I hope so too mate. I don't belive the PD engines (It is a VRS?) to be know for HGF or block cracking, but it is good that you check these things!

It's a 1.9TDi PD, in a Fabia vRS, m8. I would be very surprised if it did have HGF (it's only done 7.5K miles) but knowing my luck it probably has.

Never seen a head gasket go on a 1.9 PD so dont panic.

ah well I'll just keep an eye on it, it's not far off a service (a month or two it'll need one) so I'll mention it if it's still there when it goes in.

At least if it is HGF I can be the first :D
