Mk3 Dashcam location

Featured Replies

I am currently in the process of looking into Dashcams for the car as per signature.

Favourite is looking like the Thinkware F770 cameras mounted both front & rear.

Anyone else with front Dashcam on the Mk3, just wondering where you have mounted it?

Taking a quick look, I'd love to mount it behind the rear-view mirror, at the bottom of the housing that has the rain sensors and the high-line camera in.

I almost certainly wouldn't be able to see it behind the mirror and of course with neat fitting all cables would be hidden. However I am wondering if there is a lack of space here.

In my eyes, if not there then we'd be looking at the passenger side of that rain sensor/highline camera unit, but below the "pattern" at the top of the glass and into the windscreen wiped area (so lowish) as no point mounting a camera where the wipers don't go.

Any pictures of your mounting on a Mk3 would be appreciated :)

I have a Rexing V1, mounted to the left of the rear view mirror. Perfect location, discrete and easy to route cables to.

I did the same when I had the Octy scout, very easy and not in your eye line.

Exactly where I've put mine (as there can be some issues with the anti-glare 'dot / pattern' and suction mounts as you correctly identified). I've got no pics other than from the outside, I'm afraid, but it's easy enough to hide all the wiring by tucking it in between the windscreen and trim.

The camera's got a biased angle of about 95-100 degrees (i.e. from 180 degree angle, 90 degrees would be pointing dead-straight ahead) so it covers minutely more of the drivers' side / opposite side of the road - but that was just from trial and error of finding best angle.

No rear installed to assist I'm afraid, but know plenty of others have

Thanks all.

I'm not doing the install myself - I know, I know, apparently it's all really easy to do.

My initial plan was front only and if I'd stuck to that I "might" have considered giving it a go, however as there is also cable routing from the rear required and the hardwiring.....

A company local to me is offering the F770 Front & Rear fitted for £310 - colleague of mine had the F750 front & rear installed by the same company into his Q7 and they have done a really nice and neat job.

So willing to pay the little extra to ensure I don't break the new car :)

I've a nextbase 312gw above the rearview mirror on the left and then it's wired to the fusebox behind the glovebox.

I was looking at having a rear facing camera, but the problem which soon became apparent, certainly at night, was the tint darkened the image too much at night. I was acceptable during the day, but at night, the picture was either black or dazzled too much by headlights or streetlights. The camera just wasn't able to adjust properly to get an acceptable enough image.

The same dashcam at night through the windscreen is fine, gives a clear enough image.

Higher end dashcams may have the ability to overcome the darker rear window, but I wasn't going to spend any more money potentially getting another dashcam and it being the same.

I'll be honest, I didn't think about the tint side of things.

The Thinkware F770m is praised for it's night vision, but will be interesting to see how it looks through that tint and at night.

lotsbof good info in here.

Disnt realise there were so many Dashcam topics.

I noticed there were a couple, but as this was Mk3 related I decided to open a new one :)

I really did toy with the idea of doing it all myself. I'm certainly up for doing things with the car, but I decided I'd only had it 3 weeks and didn't fancy something going wrong. Sure it's £60 that could have been better spent, but if anything does go wrong they will be paying for the repairs, not me!

This is the Mk 3 Forum. I’d prefer to see common topics merged into a single topic and tags used properly.

I installed my Nexbase 512 myself using the guide and a set of trim removal tools (£2.99 from Amazon) I took extra caution around the Side airbag which I maybe wouldn’t have considered as much without the guide and after seeing my brothers professional install in his A5 didn’t clear the airbag. They also connected the Camera supply to his LED Headlamp module fuse and damaged the Headlamp which was a >£1k replacement fortunately carried out under warranty after a bit of a battle.

My set up is the same as the above, mine is the 650s 2CH Front and rear Dash Cams

I've mounted mine basically the same as the 950 above, but opted to move the front camera to the left of the "lane assist" camera housing.  As a driver, I can't see the unit at all, and the camera image doesn't appear to be significantly offset either, and has the advantage of being a little bit higher up

Sample video (after it has been 'processed' by facebook) - note it takes about 10 seconds before the stream is displayed in HD quality - look at the text at the bottom, and you'll see when it becomes sharper.

any tips on how to remove the trim in the top picture directly below the rear dashcam? (goes fill width across back window and halfway down at each side)  i need to tidy my install up and having this removed to help with wire placement would be useful. i can't work out where the clips are.....

you need to remove both bits of trim, the bottom bit holds the top in....

I got these from the Bodywork section in this post (page 382 in the publication or page 392 in the PDF, if that makes sense)

The company I'm using installed a pair of Thinkware F750's into a work colleagues Q7 and made a really good job of it - so I do trust their work, far more than I trust my own :)

I like this position as I feel that from the drivers seat you simply cannot see the camera at all as it hides behind the rear-view mirror. The front camera is 6 x 3 x 11 cm - but I'll ask the installer about this locations suitability first. However I'm more than prepared for it to go to the passenger side of that central housing.

Ask them the right questions about Air Bags and Fuse and see what their answers are. Then post the answers here for comment then decide whether you trust their work.

there's a pretty good answer and nice diagrams. you do need to remove the lower trim first. routing the cable i bought a second conduit and used that as i wanted to route the wiring along the drivers side.
