Windscreen not demisting

Featured Replies

Hello, I have a Skoda second hand 2 years old and the windscreen does not demist. I have the fan on full blast and I can physically feel the air coming out of the front vent and the garage told me the diagnostics were fine on it. Anyone experienced this before? It is not heavily misted just when the sun is shining in you can see it’s misted and it makes it very hard to drive

thank you

Try cleaning the inside of the windscreen. If the "film" that builds up is much more prominent when the sun is shining directly onto the windscreen when inline with your field if vision.

Two things I would suggest,

Clean the screen inside and out with a good window cleaner.

Check the screen for delimitation.

Yep, dirty inside glass. When you wipe use a damp cloth with a little detergent and you will be surprised how black the cloth will become. Mostly it will be the residue of diesel that has been blown onto the glass through the vents.

Thank you very much all for your prompt replies. Presumably I can use some household window cleaner and micro fibre cloth I hold already and not need to purchase some special apparatus / detergent for the car? Would not want it to leave horrible marks I suppose!

:)

Yes, give it a go.

Mine is a nightmare at the moment. I'm a vaper, which I think makes it worse....

+1

The funniest thing I have seen recently on the road is when following an active vaper who has the window slightly open, when they exhale the car fills with smoke which then gets slowly dragged out through the window, followed a few seconds later by filling with smoke again.

How do they see out when the car is full of smoke.

If not wanting to buy products for helping to keep inside glass clean then toothpaste or saving foam does the job.

(try scrunched up news paper as a cleaning off device.. leaves less streaks inside IME.)

I use the old fashioned Windolene original cream (the stuff in the pink bottle), never been able to clean with smearing with the spray stuff.

Or if you need a quick clean, used scrunched up newspaper.

I like a clean windscreen but I also have the heated screen so misting isn't a problem.  :)

We were taught to use vinegar and news paper if the Windolene had run out, while going through basic military training in the early 70's.:D

i find having the fans on low or high makes no difference to demisting the front window.

however, with the AC switched on, it demists within 30 secs.  all good :)

A/C is the answer, but then if disabled / inhibited because of low ambient temperature it counts for little.

A member posted this in a recent thread in Briskoda.

Just goes to show that you have to use what works for the car and heater type you have and weather conditions, moisture and temps etc.

Interesting, I never use the A/C. Does it not use extra petrol? I don't really know benefit to it other than in Summer when it is really hot and I need it on to keep me cool

Does it matter if it did use a little more fuel in summer getting the car cooler?

If it saves time and engine running trying to get heat out the heater to de-mist windows is that not worth a few Euro, Pence, Cents etc?

'Air Conditioning' not just refrigeration.

Regular checking of Pollen / cabin filter & cleaning or replacing worth it's weight in gold as well IMO.

Airconditioning units used to use extra fuel but nowadays they are much more effecient and hardly use anymore fuel at all, probably not measurable in day to day driving.

A/C is not just for cooling, it also dries the air and stops condensatiion in winter, I never turn mine off and never have misted up windows.

Also, if you turn the conditioning off you run the risk of the seals drying out which will cause leaks.

The new formula fluid that the EU has forced everyone to use leaks a lot easier than the old stuff.

Always on Auto

You might get 1 mile per gallon extra....

Air Con is good, that's why you purchased a car with Air Con.

Same. I also vape, which doesn't help, but the AC is never off, so I only have a problem when a clean is overdue!

Sound advice.  Performance of aircon/demister on my first (new) Roomster improved noticeably after changing the pollen filter.

Night before / Pre-icer worth ever penny which is not that much actually.

You can see how much fuel the aircon etc is using under (IIRC) 'convenience consumers' in the infotainment. It's buried in the Car menu options from memory. It doesn't use much at all.

ETA it's under car / selection / convenience consumers. Current consumption on mine is 1/4 gallon per hour.
