Retrofit heated windscreen

Featured Replies

Has anyone retrofitted a heated screen to a S3?

I'm having the windscreen replaced due to a crack and insurers are happy to pay for OEM parts.

They said I could pay the difference between heated and non heated but I don't know what else is involved with making it work.

Presumable a button / control panel change and wiring to the electrical control modules?

Fed up with scraping ice off a car I thought had a heated screen !

I’d like to know about this also! Did you have any joy with this @Petros?

I would be keen to get a heated screen also.

Not for the "heating" properties or getting a switch to work, but more specifically the Solar Insulating properties.

We do not get these screens in Australia and I used to have the same on a 2013 Opel Insignia I used to own and the heat retention from that was fantastic!

Oh, and I love the colour of these screens (the change from blue / purple to yellow), very cool look!

I wonder if anyone has a part number handy?

I have all the driver assist tech, so camera in the top of the windscreen too (just a heads up).

Hello,

I have just had to replace my heated screen in an L & K with an OEM screen £933 including camera and tracking set up!

Good job insurence paid up. Just letting you guys know what sort of cost. I think the cost of the sceen on its own is over £400.

Mayoboat

My wife's Fiat Panda 4x4 has a heated screen fitted that we had to have replaced back in January and the fitter said a normal screen was £80 and the heated one in ours was £450, so I suspect the Superb one to be at least a similar difference plus any coding, the switch panel, wiring etc.

It will be possible if you have time and money.

I retrofitted a heated front screen on my 2003 VW Passat 4Motion. We spend lots of time in the French Alps and at the time looked into doing at as my old Sierra XR4x4 had one and it was great.

So at the time I worked for the network and TPS were selling off old stock in their internal sales. They had four Swedish spec heated front screens in stock all for sale at £62 +vat. I had a windscreen company fit it and bought the factory wiring loom inc switch and relay to wire it in which was about £120.  The loom had Ford part numbers on it as back then Ford, had an agreement with VW in the Ford Galaxy VW Sharan platform. Ford had licensed the wavy lines in the screen to VW (now the patent has expired, lots of other manufacturers use it), but back then only Ford and VW used the design.

Worked really well and just what I wanted for a quick getaway for the pain au chocolate morning rush or driving to mid station to avoid the queues.

My 3T superb was a must have heated front screen and 4x4 heated seats front and rear and heated washer jets.

My T6 van does not have a heated screen, but I may retrofit a parking heater with telestart instead.

Also interested in retrofitting a heated screen to a 2017 TDI S. On the plus side, mine doesn't have the fancy cameras that would need recalibrating with a new screen, but on the minus side, it doesn't have the heated seats, so there might be some heater relay/extra control module required.

Can anyone shed any more light on what is required?

Evening gents, im currently looking into getting this sored, once ive worked out all the wiring thats needed and the control module thats required to upgrade from mine (which doesnt have heated screen but does have heated seats) ill post everything up on here for others to follow. Hopefully itll be useful to others!

Yep! Works a treat in our HOT Aussie climate!!! (though I have not connected the heating part, I just have it for the Heat reflective properties and my cabin is so much cooler for it)!!!

@ope126When your screen was being fitted, did you notice if the wiring to connect to the heating elements was already in situ on the car?

Very unlikely I'm afraid. If you're doing a retrofit, expect to add all required wires :(

Yes, the wires where already there in the existing loom.

The wires from the heating element are a "ribbon" style wire.

So I connected them, just in case I decided to get the new A/C Panel and whatever else is required to complete the retrofit.

But like I mentioned, I just got it for the "Heat Reflective" properties.

Which it does very well.

Thanks to both @ope126 and @langers2kfor the quick replies! I guess I'm not going to be 100% sure either way until I bite the bullet and start pulling things apart. I've got the base model 1.6 Tdi S, but it has a few apparently random extras like multifunction steering wheel and heated wing mirrors.

I don't think I'll go so far as to get a new AC panel - probably just wire up a new switch from one of the many blanks that currently adorn my dashboard...

If it helps, this seems to be the original wiring diagram: https://www.drive2.ru/l/530317274016383479/

Looks like the climate panel tells the BCM to turn on a relay which causes a second relay to turn on. The two relays then provide two 30a feeds (one for each side) of the windscreen :)

Thanks @langers2k. I'll try to get my head around that (thank goodness for Google translate).

Where abouts were the existing wires for the screen? Were they behind the A Pillar trims or are the under the scuttle panel under the bonnet?

Looking at the wiring diagram for the heated screen if the wiring isnt there then its not too bad to install. Ive been speaking to my local TPS over the past few days and im making a list of connectors/repair wires with the terminals just incase they're not there.

A Pillars are not touched during removal. The plugs are at the base of the screen (scuttle panel).

Perfect thanks, I've since been doing my homework on this subject and so far i have wired up the relay holder in the under bonnet fuse box, put in the 50A fuse to protect the circuit and also installed the terminals in position 14.  Coded the central electriconics module so that when the heated screen button is pressed the light doest just go out it actually stays on now, and i also know that the relay I've installed is triggered and out puts the voltage up to the wires that will attatch to the heated screen when i get it installed. So im just getting the last few pennies together to pay for the screen and I'll post up the rest of the photos ive got then. Photos below are of pregress ive got so far, will post the rest when ive got the screen installed! Thanks for the heads up about the position of the connectors!

Lookin good!!  Once it’s done, you will be spoiled and will never buy a car without one.

Prob just how the picture is displayed on my phone, but are they 6mm tails from the relay? They look smaller.

they are indeed 6mm tails! Ordered the repair wire from TPS the other day. Will be routing the rest of the wiring over the next few dinner times/nights til it’s finished

I will do when I’m home, I’m on holiday at the minute for a week is the 3rd photo down not clear enough? If you can’t wait I can always tell you what each component is if need be!
