Hey, I’m new to this and the world of Skoda so if I’ve said anything stupid please inform me!! 

 

I brought my 2011 Skoda Fabia 1.2 TSI Monte Carlo yesterday (21/12/18) from Evans Halshaw in Banbury which is over 50 miles from where I live (this will all come into play later in the post) 

I absolutely love the car so far, it’s quick, comfortable & handles amazingly BUT I put £20 of petrol in after leaving the dealership as it was literally empty which got me to half a tank. 

During the journey home I took it steady (don’t get me wrong first mile or two I gave it some to see what if could do) but I noticed the Fuel gauge/fuel consumption meter was dropping at a very rapid rate something I believe is really not right. 

The car has 54K on the clock and was last serviced in May only had 53K on the clock then (Full service history since Registration)

I took my sister out on a drive which was no more than 2 miles and gauge dropped so quickly it’s quite alarming. 

 

Today (22/12/18) I put in another £25 to which I got just under 3/4 of a tank it’s again dropping rapidly again and I’ve only done about 6 mile.

 

I took it down to my local Evans Halshaw garage (Stourbridge) to tell them that im not happy with the fuel consumption on the car and was fobed off with “that’s sounds right for that car” to which I argued “from a Ferrari yes, from a 1.2 Skoda which is said to have an average MPG of 50-55 is not right when I’m average 18-20 MPG”

i even took it down to Skoda but they wouldn’t tell me anything unless I put it on the ramp which would have cost me £50.

I’m going to phone the branch I brought it from and tell them I’m not happy, but the last thing I want to do is drive all the way up there to be fobed off again. 

 

The car is also slightly juddering when idle every couple of seconds?

(could this be a combining issue or something completely separate)

 

I’m thinking I might go and take it to my local garage and get them to give it a major service/look over it to see if they can see anything as from the book it’s not really had a big service for the last couple and foot the bill to Evans Halshaw as it is still under guarantee and they do their “health/service” checks before the car is released.

 

sorry for the really long post but the info I guess is better.

im really hoping this is something that’s not going to cost me a lot of £££ as this car is my new baby after having my previous car stolen in early December it’s been a very very expensive month.

Worth filling a tank and then letting the engine warm up with maybe 5 miles covered and reset the computer and do some miles and see what the 'average' shows. & fill again after maybe 50 miles and see how many litres of petrol it does require.

 

 

& Get Evans Halsaw to get it sorted if issues, poor running, they need to sell cars of merchantable quality. 

They should know by now about older 1.2 TSI's.

They should know their responsibilities so best not have others mess with the car, get it back to them.

What does the full service history show as ever having been done to the car?

 

The juddering might be the spark plugs, the ignition coils, a ignition lead, or the timing chain.

The Ignition lead and the timing chain can be problems you will see about if you look at threads in this section.

 

 

A service would be a good idea. replacing the  Spark Plugs, Air Filter, Oil & Filter.  At least checking the Air Filter would be a start.

Get the tyre pressures right first.

 

Maybe say how many litres you put in and how many miles it does as quoting the price of fuel put in means nothing.

 

45 litres @ 115 pence a litre would be £51.75.  maybe that could get you 450 miles.

I’ve had the car a week tomorrow the slightest of improvements but still not 100% happy. 

I went to check the tyre pressures and they were horrendously low.

Front (30psi)

- Front Passenger side 22psi 

- Front Drivers side 31psi 

Back (32psi) 

- Rear Passenger side 23 psi 

- Rear Drivers side 22 psi 

 

putting the tyre pressures right has upped the MPG I can push 30/35 if I’m driving like a learner.

Tomorrow I will be driving from Birmingham to Sheffield 98 miles.

I’ll be filling up the tank so i’ll be able to get a more accurate reading on what it’s getting to the mile.

Evans Halshaw has finally been back in touch and told me to book it in to my local EH dealers and they’ll have a look at it. (I’ll follow with an update if they find anything) 

 

The car was serviced back in May at 53,000 miles when I picked it up it had only done 1000 miles after that, could this be a factor that it’s done hardly any miles over 7 months (it’s like 142 miles a month) or it could have sat not used for a while? So the engine components haven’t really had a good run through?

 

Also I’ve seen a few people saying to try running it with super unleaded, or better “quality” fuel from shell/BP but from I understand it’s all pretty much the same fuel?

Forget Better Quality Shell / BP it is not better quality,

just buy Super Unleaded if you want from Sainsburys which is 97 ron or Tesco Momentum 99.

That will be £2.25 extra a tank max, rather than BP or Shell Super Unleaded another £2.25 or more extra again.

That might help the engine run better, but it should be running well first, ie needs serviced and maintained.

 

Evan Halshaw obviously never had the most basic of a PDI (pre delivery inspection) or service done if that was the tyre pressures.

 

Have you looked at the Air Filter?

How are you meauring the mpg or is this what the on board computer says or just a rough estimate after putting £20 in. the fuel gauges are not usually very linear.

 

The only way you can judge the mpg is to compare tank to tank full averages. I use Spritmonitor to help with this (click on my signature below) but some on this forum use Fuelly.com.
