Windscreen scratching

The scratches are following the arc of the wipers, it looks to me as though some dirt or grit has ended up being dragged over the glass by the wiper blades.

I agree ....can I make this post possibly a little clearer ...I KNOW how scratches are caused etc etc ...the question is ...bearing in mind the care most people take of their cars to avoid this is ....has anyone experienced unexpected scratches and do you have a theory as to why ....without constantly stating the obvious ...which has been taken into consideration already

Wow, have you had a bad day?

Good luck with your thread, I'm sure you'll have no end of friendly members falling over themselves to help.

Iirc there was some discussion on the Superb III section about this issue. It seemed that a few members with heated screens got unexpected early scratches, there was some talk about it being linked to the heated screen and whether its construction with the heating film made the glass less hard or something.

Thanks for the information ...that's what I was looking for really ...a constructive starting point to try and get to the bottom of the issue ..I've got a heated screen and it seems to be a theme with some other members too ...I doubt Skoda would ever acknowledge this but it's good to get a heads up on the issue ....thank you

I would put my money on some with heated screens having scratches because they defrost using the heated screen and then use wipers,

which is different from those without heated screen getting frosted / snowed on overnight or while parked & sand / grit coming in with freezing rain or snow and people actually clearing that off. So screen cleared manually before the wipers are used.

If you use a scraper, gloved hand etc and you scratch the glass you hear it or see it and it might not be where the wipers sweep.

There have not been ice on my windshield since i got it.  It is parked in garage at home, and temperature has been +0°C while at work.

So can i send You a private message with bank account informations, so you can transfer your money to my account?

And please remember that we have been car owners for many many years without these issues. I have not changed my habits, and i refuse to do so because Skoda delivers gel-glass-windshields. Do You wipe your wipers everytime You have been out driving?

I had heated windshield in my mondeo. Not a single scratch.

?

Did you fit different wipers from the ones the car came with after asking about that in February?

?

Did the scratching happen then?  Or was it just an issue with the rear wiper?

Windscreens i have on VW Group cars in recent years sitting at my house have been the worst of any for affected by tiny chips from being near a sand and gravel quarry when the wind blows in a certain direction , some other cars i have had sitting same place over the years no issues and screens never needed replaced,

or broken in an accident...

I often throw a bucket of water over a screen to clean off grit before driving and using the wipers, from and rear.

Send me money if you like,

but as i said, 'I would put my money on some...'  that will not be you in the 'some'.  You are an individual case.

There were posts when the Kodiaq came out, 'were they more prone to stone strikes because of being higher' or the angle of the screen.

Same answer or place to get the answer is, the Insurers and Glass replacement people, they can crunch numbers with a computer.

Maybe your car colour has different creatures dropping stuff from the sky on your screen right on the wipers.

I changed my rear wiper.

I have also new ones for the front windshield "on stock" to replace the OE front wipers.

Car was probably produced 3-4 month before i received it. Standing still, maybe outside, probably don't do anything good for the wipers. But then Skoda should change them before sending the car to the customer.

Agreed.

Too many Banked cars sitting around Europe and then just delivered in the normal way stock cars might be.

Some should maybe have had an Interim service and not just a normal TPI due to where they were.

Yes that's a possibility too ...but although I've got a heated screen I've never actually used it as the car is always garaged and I've never actually had any ice on the screen as yet ...even on a run after taking the car out of the garage in the winter the screen has always been warm enough to stop ice forming ...it just seems that ...with a perfectly clean screen and wiper blades ...the scratches just formed for no reason ...which is the reason I think it may be related to the physical characteristics of the wiper/blade assembly itself possibly also linked to a softer compound glass on a heated screen

I had a couple of scratching problems on the glass on my Octavia Scout. The first was when the front windshield scratched from using the fuel filler door ice scraper! I was surprised and disappointed that the glass could be so easily scratched. The windshield was not dirty and this was a first time use of the scraper which was not dirty either.

The second was an approximately 20 mm scratch on the load area side window which I suspect was done by the window cleaners scraping past with their ladder.

I successfully softened the latter to the point where it was essentially invisible using a mixture of jeweller's rouge powder (obtained from an eBay seller) and olive oil. It took quite a while of rubbing with a soft cloth but it worked. I would think twice about using this method on the front windshield because it might leave a visible flaw in the surface.

Are these definitely 'scratches', and not just marks on the screen.

Before anyone shouts at me, I'm not insinuating anyone here is daft, i'm only asking is it possible?

Some marks can be very stubborn to remove, sometimes requiring a specific cleaner type, maybe thinners or something similar, and sometimes plain water can remove a mark that other cleaner types will not remove.

The second picture with the twin 'scratches' in particular look more like marks to me. Remember I'm just trying to help ;)

No ...they are scratches

  • 3 years later...

I have the same problem. I bought my Skoda Kodiaq brand new 1 year ago (May 2021) and this summer got "arc" scratches on the windscreen. Following wipers. Out of nowhere. One is on the right side and is clearly seen, two others are on the left and can be seen only under direct sunlight. I have changed stock wipers to Bosch AeroTwin today. Will see how it goes

Had 3 cars before and never seen anything like that

So it's not just you @Raymorris

Have you ever tried to talk with dealer about this? Just wondering
