Sticking rear drum

Featured Replies

My daughter's handbrake got stuck. After reading across different forums it seems to be a common problem with Fabia 6Y, 5J and the Roomsters.

My plan was to quickly have a look and if the parts are not worn just to put some copper grease on the sticking parts - most likely the lever for the handbrake.

Quickly became protracted. I could just not get the shoe assembly out between the wheel carrier and the cylinder.

Eventually I decided to get a 32mm 12 facet nut to get the carrier off. After that it was a walk in the park. I greased the moving parts, one of which had become very stiff. Now the rear brakes work like new.

Is there a way as the workshop manual describes to remove the shoe assembly with the brake shoe assembly in place?

Its quite a common mod to add VW return springs to the handbrake / rear calipers, they seemed to not bother on the fabia Mk1 not sure if the fabia Mk2 has them either

The OP mentioned "brake shoes" so no point in adding an external spring to the rear callipers.

Edit:- The early cars and later cars, even now do not have external return springs, it feels like they increased the strength of the internal springs when these cars were first updated, but just for good measure I fitted a set to my wife's August 2015 Polo 1.2TSI 110PS when was brand new!

I think as you have discovered, once you have removed one hub you will end up being able to work out what/where needs sorting out and so can get away with leaving the other hub on.

Places like ECP sell rear shoe kits either fully assembled or just the basic shoes, so it does look like some people/workshops prefer replacing the lot.
