Opened up Brake Ducts

Featured Replies

so today, after removing my wheel arch liners, i decided to remove a plastic flap that keeps the brake ducts closed.

i don't know why Skoda would have the brake duct airflow closed/blocked?!?!?

anyways, its out :)

now i can gain an extra 4m of braking distance thanks to the cooler brakes.  hahahaha

Wow, I didn't expect the front area of the wheel arch to be so completely closed. Sure the extra cooling does not provide any stopping benefit and the baseline Superb is not intended as a performance car but at least the 280 could have come with better flowing wheel-arches, similar to other MQB cars of similar performance.

Thought I would leave them on for the next owner of the GTI, but now I will move my current RS3 brake ducts over to the Superb before selling. I believe the control arms must be identical so they should fit fine.

Wow good find! Will have to have a look at mine and see if the ducts are blocked of too.

One thing for sure though, the 206TSI has slotted grills on both fender liners (for airflow for the coolers in the lower arches).

I'm under the impression that the 206 (280) versions have this brake duct unblocked, but it would b good to get ur confirmation.

Regarding the slots on the fender liner - mine has them too.  U can see it on the last image above, to the right.

Or r u referring to something different?

After putting max lock on the front wheels, I can see that the ducts on the 280 are closed.

I'm now trying to decide whether or not I open them or just carry on with the carbon ceramic brake upgrade I had planned.  I'm sick of cooking my brakes when nipping down the shops.

This is what the Golf GTI/R fender liners look like:

Surprised the 162 at least is having the arch liner fully closed.

Wow.....that has a lot bigger opening brake ducts and lots of slots above it.

That must b for the R.

I'd b surprised if the GTi has the same.  Unless its the Performance edition with the bigger 340mm brakes.

Hmm....that I was not expecting!!

GTI has the same opening on the liner (the one circled in red) and almost certainly the same slots above it. Also GTI Clubsport 290 and Leon Cupra are the same as in the pic. Superb also has 340/310mm discs front/rear no?

Same slots in the 206TSI / 280, however mine also has the brake duct sealed off...

As in the pic below then?

Correct, on both sides (left and right).

The brake duct is only as big as JR RS has shown in his original post pictures.

Love the Racingline Brake Calipers in this picture!!!

interesting differences between the brake cooling elements used by Skoda and VW

both the GTi and 162 (220) have the same brake setup, yet have different cooling elements

similarily, both the R and 206 (280) have the same brake setup, but again - have different cooling elements.

VAG is certainly distinguishing between what is "sporty" and wat isn't.

Here is a picture of mine (showing the grilles on the drivers side - the same on the passenger side also).

Remember the 206TSI has openings on each side of the front lower grille also to channel air in...

By comparison the "blanked off" brake ducts appear very small.

Even my wife's Jetta has a more open area to channel air in as per the pics above from other Golf owners.

Or they are purposefully giving certain marques/models advantages over others,  to maintain the group hierarchy

We're all aware that there's performance tweaks that can be made via VCDS on our Skodas, but these things are enabled as standard on Audi and some VW's.

Yes, they fit either side of the front lower grille.

The ducting is to channel the air through to the Transmission / Oil Coolers on either side.

The air the comes out within the slotted part of the wheel well (once again on either side).

Nothing to do with Brake Ducts though.

This appears to only be on the high powered petrol engines.

Ah I see, I’ve got a 272 sportline plus on order so it may well have these already then

Yes, so have I (well, it's still a 280 in Oz). By the looks of this photo of a MY19 Sportline 280 the ducts are open.

Wow, that looks like the first Superb in OZ that has the Supernova wheels (in Glossy Black).

I know slightly less than nothing about this but I imagine that aerodynamics and consequently minor improvements in fuel consumption/pollution figures are the reason for them being blocked off on lower models in the range.

They are 100% on the 272 for oil cooling as mentioned by @ope126

Are they open on both sides on the 272? On my 280 the right hand side was originally blocked off, since there’s nothing behind it.

I decided to order the relevant “open” part from superskoda since I hated the asymmetrical look.

So 5mths on, have you noticed any significant difference by un-blocking these ducts?

I am looking to do the same over the coming weeks when I put the new tryes on...

Lol.....no tangible difference!!

Do I have more stopping power as a result of "cooler" brake discs???  Highly unlikely, but it's the thought that counts ;-)
