another Gen 5 haldex not working

Featured Replies

after last winter being a snow god in my 2014 face lift skoda yeti L&K 170bhp with only 26k I was quick to hop in and do a shop run for my parents in the last dumping of snow but my illusions were shattered when I got stuck fast coming back up my drive, the front wheels were just spinning, traction control lights flashing and nothing no matter what I tried would get it up the drive that Id driven up in my two wheel drive van an hour earlier!!.

so far I have taken the haldex pump out cleaned the filter which was absolutely chocked and re filled with new oil but still no 4x4,I then took it to my local garage who put it on a Bosch diagnostic which showed a haldex fault but unknown so he reset it but nothing still no 4x4.

Thats where I,m at at the moment,I,m thinking of buying the Ross Tec VCDS and a new haldex pump ?,I,m gonna check the battery voltage later as well ,any help would be appreciated .

many thanks.

The pump will be ruined now its been ran dry, either test it or get a new one would be my guess.

I was thinking of trying to unplug the pump and run a 12v fly lead to it but that won,t prove it pumps ,have you tested one and if so how did you do it .

cheers.

No I've never tested one. I just know a common failure mode is that the screen blocks up, pump runs dry and overheats. Seems like if you have this generation of Haldex you need to step in and clean the screen every now and then if you want the pump to last.

Is it possible to run the engine while you sit under the car and put a screwdriver to the pump and listen to see if you can hear it maybe? I have only ever worked on the Gen 1 Haldex so not sure of the set-up

its stopped raining so I,m gonna do the battery voltage and get it on the ramps again so I can get the numbers of the pump and ill see if I can hear anything and I was also see if I can unplug it and do a resistance check apparently its men,t to be about 2 ohms.

Good idea, let us know if you find anything

well the pump is showing .3 ohms ,the battery resting voltage  is 12.4 volts,I had a listen to the pump and nothing ,thinking next check the haldex fuse maybe ?

It will be a blown pump. Save your time bite the bullet and order one.

just ordered pump and oil :)

I had my haldex fail not working for a few months and pointed this out to the dealer prior to end of warranty and it was rectified but it appears it’s a known problem with water getting into the wiring near the pump so it does not activate when demand is required ,some good info on U tube

I just had an issue with my Haldex 5 on my Superb L&K 2016. It have probably not worked for several months. Gave the error 16670 in VCDS.

Took it to the workshop where they cleaned it out (the filter was more or less completely blocked) and filled with new oil and performed the pump learn procedure.

After this it works again.

In the market for a late 4x4 Yeti...so interested in more details. What's the cost of replacing the pump etc?

Shame op salisburyplain has not updated, because I noticed he did a lot of  off road driving  whereas I hardly ever needed the haldex to cut in during the almost 3 years to its issue/failure which I never really questioned the dealership about as it was done under warranty but there are quite a few yeti owners who do a fair bit of off road who haven’t experienced issues.

I think it kicks in a lot more often than you may think

eg pulling sharply out of a T junction I often feel like a shove from the rear as the rear wheels start to help

I have a recollection that the Haldex always splits the drive 50/50 between front and rear when taking off from rest, but reverts to full front wheel drive pretty quickly unless wheelslip is detected.  Someone will no doubt come along and prove me wrong - which is fine too.

When my Haldex failed I found a useful test was to pull away from rest around a tight left-hand, uphill bend on a wet road (handily, there is a traffic-light controlled junction just like that not far from where I live*).  If the front wheels scrabbled for grip => Haldex was u/s.  (I cleared the Haldex pump fault code a couple of times and it did seem to kick the pump back in to life for a while each time, but in the end the only permanent cure was a new pump.)

* Yes, including the wet road criterion.  Well, quite often, anyway.  I do live in Scotland, after all!

@ejstubbs Was this on your 2017 car? If so what kind of mileage had you done?
