Possible DMF Failure

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Picked up a 1.9TDI PD130 Octavia Estate 2003 about a month ago - have put on just over 1k miles on the car. For the last week or so,  the car has started to make this nasty juddering sound between 1000-1500rpm which is especially audible in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear. Seems ok at idle and not so audible in 6th. Is this likely to be a DMF failure? My dilemma is that I picked the car up for less than £1000 with full history and it's is a clean car for the age. Is there anything else it might be?

If a DMF how long does it have before it goes pop?

A video is too large to attach

DMF issue usually makes a noise at tickover with the clutch up first of all.

When does the noise happen1000-1500 - power on or off, cruising , all the time? Engine mounts can cause juddering with power on or power off.

Is the engine always on four cylinders? Another know pd issue is with the pd injector wiring loom

Without understandind the "juddering sound" it is hard to diagnose.

Simple check if the dmf is failing - its going cause a shudder through the frame, Its a heavy thing spinning around in an unbalanced manner (when failing.. its smooth and balanced when okay...). Noises could be from the clutch.

So.. park up, open you driver door about a foot

Slowly lift your foot off the clutch, while holding the revs at around 1000rpm, up to just on the biting point.

Watch the vibration of the door. If its quite severe, yeah the dmf is on the way out.

Thats what prompted me getting the dmf and clutch done on my inshi7nia last year, diagnosed during a normal service. No door vibrations since the change. BIL had his done (another inshi7nia) just after christmas.. he asked me to take a look at his car as gear change wasnt great. I opened door and it was bouncing like a jack hammer...

If its not shaking the frame of the car, its probably only starting to fail. My mechanic mentioned "its fine until you cant handle the shaking anymore, that point will probably come before total death" i got it done 5weeks later.. after becoming aware of the shake i couldnt ignore it at all!!!

The noise is on acceleration at low revs. It sounds like I’m in too high of a gear but a lot louder and coarser.

Is the dog bone mount in good order?.

Indeed that's why I mentioned engine mounts - the one one top between gearbox/chassis can also be a suspect.

Thanks for your reply. So I tried this and the door didn't seem to vibrate too much - more the handbrake letting go haha. Have uploaded a dropbox video above to describe sound.

I will check tomorrow. Could this be why the car intermittently shakes when sitting at idle?
