I have put 235/35 R19's on my vRS without an issue.  Overall wheel diameter (tyre wall and radius of wheel) I would've thought was about the same as what you're proposing.  However, don't take my word for it, there are websites which you can enter your before and after tyre/wheel sizes on and it will highlight any issues to you.  I'm sure someone else will be able to provide a link.

are the mk3 18'' alloys 7.5 or 8J wide either way yes they will fit 235 are more suited for 8J

if you put a tyre on a rim that's too narrow, the cornering performance is affected because the walls will distort more.

why do you want to go 235 ?

I did the same on my ex 230, 225/35/19 to 235/35/19 the rim protection was 100% better.

I was thinking od doing this on my 245 to again get better rim protection and a little bit more rubber on the road.  Both rims are 7.5 wide.

If the tyre size fitted is not a size on the manufacturers certified list then you will probably find your insurance wont like it, or it could even be voided following any serious accident where an assessor is involved which would have implications beyond insurance.

What's the price difference comparing say like for like, Bridgestone, Pirelli or Michelin for example?

Talking mm differences in radius, insurance wont be bothered.

235 over 225

Yeah you might have slightly wider tyres honestly you probably wont notice the difference and the wont look much different either

Wider and lower profile = more road noise / less protection from potholes and reduced fuel efficiency

Comes down to price point  if 225s are cheaper I'd stop with them

Are you sure? He's not asking about a different profile so it will in fact be slightly taller.

Further up he stated 235/35

Also actually unsure if he's on about 18 or 19s as quoted both sizes...

I think he was talking about what he did on his old car (225/35/19 to 235/35/19).  Pretty sure he is now talking 18s and going from the normal 225/40 to 235/40.

Having just refitted my summer wheels (225/40/18 on 7.5j) I would say a 235 would fit ok.  Would 17s fit over the brakes on a 245?

I don't think you quite understand, vehicle type approval specifies strictly what tyre/wheel sizes are allowed be fitted. Fitting any other size invalidates type approval.

Some, perhaps not all, insurance companies are very picky about this and consider it a mod too far.

I attached the tyre/wheel type approved list for you to check in my previous post.

I hope people duly notify their insurance if they change tyre sizes, as required in the terms and conditions.

Ok pal, this isn't a change in rolling radius or full change of wheel size  nor are we taking about putting a stretch on tyres by fitting completely the incorrect size.

What we are talking about is 225 to 235 this WILL  not affect your insurance or make it void, nor do they need to be notified.

Feel free to talk to arron, owner of coversure insurance derby,  he's my brother so I have a fairly decent understanding of the insurance trade.

Most policies will come with a 2-5% allowance in variance of tyre size

I never seen that in any policy I've had.

And I'm not your pal......:tongueout:

Once eat a 1.2kg tin of dog food for a bet at work. Quite nice but very filling. Had to go for a very long walk afterwards.

Just to clarify, on my Ex 230 standard size was 225/35/19 and I fitted 235/35/19 which improved rim protection. My 19 plate 245 is on 225/40/18 but was asking wether 235/40/18 would fit

Ps. " does anyone know of PAL dog food comes in Popcorn flavour..............:notme: "

Not sure but if you want to snack on something whilst watching the Brexit latest thread then Cat food (tinned of course) is even tastier than PAL.

So your policy doesn't allow you to drive the car, or fit a specified size?

Hi

Read the above comments. Can anyone confirm if tire wall distortion is dependent/specific to a specific tyre brand/tyre model?

I have the exact same thoughts as the OP - changing my current 225/40 R18 Pilot Sport 4 tyres to 235/40 R18 in order to gain additional rim protection but unsure whether or not this will have an impact on handling. PS4´s do come already with some added "rim protection" but honestly in real life the design on Gemini rims simply make the rims very scuff biased in original tire size combination.

From actual fit itself I understand it would fit on the factory 18" Geminis without any issues, correct?

The real question is would you fit a 9.5" wide tyre on a 7.5" wheel. Personally I wouldn't even though it will fit OK. Currently have the 235/35R19 tyre fitted to a 8.5" wheel so tyre is stretched nicely over the wider wheel. Kerbing is only a problem if your brain stops working as kerbs do not move....ever.:blush

Tyre wall distortion is caused by putting the weight of a car on the tyres. How much the tyre walls distort on a given model and wheel size is a factor of inflation pressure and the detail design of that specific make and model.

Well, I make that wheel is 79% of tyre width. There's no technical reason to not do so since that's comfortably within the usual wheel should be 70 to 95% of tyre width recommendation.

I agree with you about kerbing!
