Steering wheel swap

Featured Replies

I would try contacting him, you never know if he can find one of those you want. Definately would never recommend using cars-equipment again after my last experiences with them, see my reply a few posts up.

Yeah I know what you mean by the behaviour 1=>2 when coming to a stop. I don't mind using the brakes at the very end when I'm stopping, it's mostly to use the engine braking a little bit to try saving the brakes. I also tried the S mode "quick-pull" on the stick, but S-mode doesn't quite suit my driving...I try to be as relaxed as possible.

So.

I got my new steering wheel (with paddles) from THIS excellent seller on Ebay. Very good packaging, fast delivery, and the price was fair. Fitting it into my car was easy enough, simply the same procedure as VAG has used for the past 100 years. Turn steering wheel 90°, unclip the clip at the back (I use a small flat screwdriver and a small mirror to see). This releases the airbag at one end. Turn the steering wheel 180°, unclip the other one. Airbag pops right out. Unplug the yellow clip (this cuts all electrical current so the airbag is rendered "safe", as far as it can ever be safe). Unclip the lead that goes towards the multi function buttons. Use the M12 splime bit to remove the center bolt, remove old steering wheel. Done. Installing one is the same procedure in reverse, the only difference is you just push the airbag into it's 2 clips. This requires quite a push, so you'll end up honking the horn, scaring yourself sh*tless. Job done! Paddles work straight out of the box on mine, no coding needed.

I had to install new buttons on my new steering wheel with paddles, I need the "view" button for Virtual Cockpit, so I bought that separately and fitted those into the new steering wheel. Also a 5 minute job.

Got to play around a bit with the paddles this morning on my way to work, and I'm happy! With my manual cars I always try to use engine braking as much as possible, and that's the only thing I really miss in my new DSG car. Now at least I can shift down a few cogs when I'm coasting up to a roundabout, so there's that.

Thanks for this, I’m about to fit mine as it arrived yesterday (same seller).   Can I just check, before fitting, did you disconnect the battery or just turn the ignition off?

It’s good practice to disconnect the battery when working on any of the airbags,

that said I know of a few people who have done it with the battery still connected without issue,

one thing to remember though if you turn the ignition on with any airbag disconnected then you will need VCDS etc to turn the airbag warning light off.

Thanks, does disconnecting the battery cause any other issues or 'reset' anything else?

I only make sure the ignition is switched off personally.

Nothing that driving the car 50 yards will not sort out.

Thanks for all your help.   I’ve now changed the wheel, took me a while to suss out how the clips on the back of the airbag work, and as I disconnected the battery to be on the safe side, I did get a load of errors on reconnection, all of which reset themselves after driving the car (although the blind spot assist took about 4 miles to recalibrate itself and clear the error!).

I’ll write a proper guide for the wheel swap, as I took several photos along the way.

All good now, and the paddles are great.   Should have been standard on the L&K.   I can highly recommend the eBay seller 'aachener-automobile' - delivered fairly quick and the wheel is brand new.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been reading this thread with interest, I have a 2017 L&K DSG model, but no steering wheel paddles. I would like to fit the paddles.

The ebay seller recommended above, does not appear to have a SW suitable for my car at the moment, but I found another, again from a german seller

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/163419567565

To ensure that this wheel was compatible with my car, I released the SW airbag and photo'd the part no 3VO419091L, then emailed him to check.

He has replied, and says that it is compatible, BUT will require recoding to make it work !

This seems to go against every post in this thread, but could it be true for my particular car ?

If it did require recoding, is that a main dealer thing, or would I just have to find someone with VCDS ?

Thanks

No coding needed - I did mine recently.

Try this one - much cheaper - this is where I bought mine from - quick delivery and brand new.  Just check with the seller that it will fit your car.

The paddles are great.

I did see this listing in ebay, but was concerned that the listing said 2016 (mine is 2017) and the buttons on the wheel are not the same as mine.

Also the part number is 3T0419091AJ , where as the one I found is 3V0419091S.

So I emailed the seller suggested, asking him if his steering wheel was compatible with my car. and if it would need coding (given te difference in years and button symbols). I just got this reply

Hi

You do not need the whole steering wheel!
You can buy original steering wheel rim and paddles
and pass the rest of your steering wheel
then the car re-coded so that the DSG is working
see link below

https://www.ebay.de/itm/Orig-Skoda-Octavia-Fabia-Superb-Yeti-Roomster-Citigo-Leder-Lenkrad-Schaltwippen-/401731176284?hash=item5d890b475c

So he is suggesting that I buy a blank steering wheel and some paddles, and to use them with my buttons. Although he still says I will need recoding.

Does this seem reasonable ? has anyone dis-assembled the flappy gear changes from the steering wheel who would like to comment ?

Thanks

Ian

Personally I would just buy the complete replacement wheel with paddles, it takes 15 mins to swap (max) and if you keep it in really nice condition you’ll probably get 75% back if you resell it (and refit your original wheel) when you sell the car.

I just checked and the part number for the one I bought is 3V0 419 091 M.  It works perfectly and says it fits Superb models from 2015-17 on the ad:

  • 2 weeks later...

So I replied to aachener-autoteile, saying that I would wait until a complete Steering Wheel was available.

After a couple of days he sent me a link to a complete SW, that had the correct buttons on, and flappy paddles. Again he insisted that it would need re-coding.

I took the plunge and ordered it. Finally arrived yesterday and I fitted it this morning. Very simple job, took 10 minutes max, and all buttons work including gear change, NO recoding required, as every one else on here has found. Perhaps he feels that he has to say this, then if recoding is not required, its a bonus, and if coding is required he can say that he told you so.

Anyway, thanks to everyone who gave me the confidence to order and fit this. When you want to accelerate rapidly, the buttons are much easier to use than the DSG selector.

cheers

Ian

I’m still amazed that paddles aren’t standard fitment.

I had a Passat S (base model) a few years ago. Paddles came as standard, although I had to persuade the dealer to retrofit cruise control as part of the deal.

  • 1 year later...

After a very long time I finally managed to find (thanks to this forum) a place which sells the steering wheel I need at a reasonable price.

However, I don't think I have the correct socket to remove the steering wheel.
Looking around on the internet, most people seem to be talking about Triple Square sockets, whilst earlier in this topic a spline drive was mentioned a few times.

Since multiple people seem to already have done this install, which should I actually get?

Thanks!

Surprised to see you using engine braking as much as possible! Unless of course, you mean coming off the gas and letting the car slow down over a longer distance. The old school method of using gears to slow down, change down again to slow more, etc has really been outmoded since the 70"s. Using the brakes to slow is much safer as it allows others to realise you are slowing, whilst wearing out relatively cheap components, whereas using the "drop a gear" method adds wear and tear to a fairly expensive bit of mechanics, along with the lack of rear brake light warning. Cant be good!

This is true but hitting the down shift a few times as you stand on the brakes makes it much more effective.... and fun.

@kriva With regards to the triple square, I bought this kit from Amazon. I can't remember which one it needs though, sorry!

Thanks! I ordered a similar kit from Amazon.de, which should arrive on Saturday. Meanwhile, my new steering wheel has already arrived, I ordered it on Monday, so delivery took only about three days from the Czech Republic to Belgium.

From what I've been able to learn you need the following;

1. Heated steering wheel (obviously)

2. Airbag for heated wheel is different. Unsure if it's a completely new unit or if the airbag is the same but the COVER is different, but I know there's an issue there. So maybe a new airbag.

3. New wiring between wheel, airbag and clockspring.

4. New steering clock spring that has extra plug for heated steering wiring

5. Climatronic with plug for a wiring harnass between BCU and the climatronic. So new panel.

6. Loom from climatronic to BCU.

7. Coding.

2: nope, same airbag if you buy the correct wheel.

3. nope, the wiring between wheel airbag and clockspring is fine , again if you buy the correct wheel

4. yes, 5q0953569b for cars up to 22 Apr 2019 ("a" version is not heated, "b" version has the heating connector)

5. there are a LOT of part numbers for the climatronic control panel, but so far I can't find any that are specific to the heated wheel. Will update when I'm certain
