Superb 2017 Smartlink Failure

Featured Replies

Hi,

After using Android Auto/Smartlink on my Skoda Superb since I purchased the car as new in 2017, it has worked brilliantly.  Phone is Moto G5 Plus

Over the weekend, it stopped working and I've been unable to get it to restart.

1) I've factory reset the system in the car.

2) I've used three different cables, including ones that were previously successful.  All of which show the phone as charging when plugged into the car USB socket.

3) Smartlink does not react at all when the phone is plugged in.

4) I am yet to check another phone but am fairly sure this isn't the problem.

5) Bluetooth connection to the car is working as normal.

It's this design of head unit.

Are there any other troubleshooting steps I could try?

Thanks.

Nick

Typo

Any recent software updates on the phone? That would be my first thought in your case after you've tried all of what you said.

It's more often the phone's side that is the culprit of a ceased connection rather than the car.

Have you tried pressing the menu button and selecting car play from there?

Yes...it's not responding at all.  I get the three different apps greyed out and it telling me to connect USB.

Nothing that I can think of.  I'll see whether it can communicate to a computer in case data transfer is somehow locked.

Thanks for your help.

Factory resetting the phone could do it also although only as a last effort and only if another phone works fine in the mean time.

Thanks....is there any way of rebooting this head unit?  Although, I can't think it'll help, as I've fully factory-reset it already.

Keep on pressing the power button, I think it needs 10 sec or so, then it'll restart.

Also try cleaning any fluff out of the USB socket on the phone

Check for dust in the usb connector on the car/phone, gentle use of a toothpick should be enough. one of the pins could be blocked used for this.  (I do mean gentle, don't shove it around like you are digging for gold or you are likely to break something).

:D:D

i would say its a cable issue ... i have a basket of cables which dont work in the car but work fine for fast charging...

I tend to go through a new cable once every 6 months months max in the car before it fails to connect or mid connection the phone screen starts lighting up as the charge voltage is unstable.

Hi all...thanks so much for your help.

I have found the problem, although been unable to resolve yet.

It was indeed the phone.  I managed to track down a phone that had previously worked, I plugged it in and Smartlink worked immediately.  However, I've been unable to fix the problem yet - think it may be something to do with the USB cache...but the current version of Android doesn't seem to want me to delete...but I will get there...at least I know it's not the car at fault!

Ok so you're almost there. As I said earlier, if you can't get it to work via some setting/option, factory resetting the phone will most definitely do it. Although setting up everything again on a phone is more time consuming than setting up a Windows installation nowadays...

uninstall and reinstall android auto on ur phone.

should do the trick on ur moto gp....g5 :)

Installed and run CCleaner...uninstalled and reinstalled Android Auto...still nothing....conscious this is a Skoda forum, not an Android forum....so thanks for your help.  Cleaning contacts on phone is next step...hoping not to have to wipe the phone and start again, but seeming increasingly likely.

I get this with iPhone when I have to authorise the accessory, not sure what triggers the authorisation (same phone same accessory). Do you have to authorise the accessory in android?

Yes...but I've used it successfully for two years...and now it's stopped...but at least I know it's the phone...it charges via the car, but doesn't interact with it in any other way (Bluetooth is fine)...odd...still trying things.

now you mention usb - i think i may of had to enable USB logging in the developer options to get it to work once. (i cant really remember what i did! )

Hi, I had issues with this exact issue after I bought a 16 plate superb last week.

With Android go to settings, about phone, scroll down to build number and press it 7 or 8 times until developer mode is active, then go back to the previous menu and you will see "{ } developer options" will be active. Go into this menu, enable usb debugging and ensure that usb is set to media. Then disable usb debugging.

My phone was set to charge only, even though I had previously it as a mass storage drive. It seems it randomly changes this setting back to charge only unless I have the developer option active. My phone is a nexus 6p

The phone will always revert to charge-only mode when it's been restarted or switched off and on.

On my phone, once it's changed in developer options it remains even if the phone is restarted
