Squeal starting octy 1.9 TDI

Featured Replies

When my brother starts his Octavia 1.9 TDI there is some sort of a squeal from the engine. It only lasts about 2 seconds. It only happens when starting . Is this the starting motor starting to fail ??

Any ideas???

Fan belt slipping maybe? Sometimes toy can get a slightly strange noise, but not exactly a squeal when the starter motor fails to disenage.

Sounds like starter motor is complaining (if it's a really high speed noise and it only does it when starting from cold).

Some people say you can clean the motor and solve the problem. Others get it replaced. Do a search on "starter motor".

i know ford galaxys suffer from a squeal on initial startup , which is from the starter , the end of the shaft on the starter spins in a bush in the gearbox casing and when this is dry it squeals , a bit of lube should cure it .

aye i got the same problem too bro ...i think its commin from the air con ....but i still cud nt figure out the exact problem coz its not there when i take it to service

During his last service the mechanic looked at the starter motor. Cleaned and greased it up. No squeal heard now.

Squeal from under the bonnet at startup = slipping belt of some kind.

Often starts off doing it at startup, as it gets worse it'll do it under acceleration, or when the air is damp.

The reason being that at startup there is the most load on the belt obviously.

Check the belts.. make sure they're all tight and unperished. Should be piece of pee to tighten/change if need be.

I'd be very suprised if it was at all starter motor related.

For reference, to check a belt is tight take the longest reach of the belt, push down with one finger, it should move a max of about half an inch before stopping. And remember, a belt that's too tight is just as bad, cos it'll probably snap.
