DAB Reception

Featured Replies

Hi All

I have a 2015 Octavia VRS which has the standard headunit (no satnav) but the DAB reception seems a bit weak?

I have used the manual/auto search facility which seems to work but I find there are more 'reception black' spots than I would have expected

Our other car is a Ford (Sony unit) and it has far better reception than mine?

Maybe this is normal or are there any simple checks, software upgrade etc?

Thanks Mike

Think its fairly normal. Mine does that from time to time.

Yip mine is **** as well.

I think this may have improved on newer cars. The DAB reception on my MY16 car with a MIB2 radio manufactured in June 2015, is fine. There have been several threads about poor reception in older cars though, and there is a thread somewhere about upgrading the MIB1 software.

I was going to say I think this must have been improved on later cars. My car as per signature, I've been really impressed with DAB reception.

I'd heard mixed things about DAB in a car, signal loss, etc. I tried it and I honestly cannot remember losing signal.

Sorry, I'm not helping you OP - but I think it's an issue with the setup rather than DAB in general.

Thanks all for the feedback, i will just put up with it...:music:

Opted for DAB in my MY19, just to realize that we don't have any DAB stations in Sweden :@

My 2016 Scout has a perfect signal - almost everywhere, very few shadows in the larger cities.

Could it be the UK radio transmissions? (correct word?) Norway has shut down all FM signals (except local) and is now only broadcasting DAB.

In my experience DAB is patchy in many areas of the UK, not just in my Octavia but also in my other car.

Two examples (which are identical with both my cars):

1) DAB drops out for about 200 yards about 1/2 mile from my home on the main road

2) DAB reception of Gold gradually drops out more often when going North on the M5 until it drops out completely near Taunton

Yeah it's pants. I put the cheapest DAB head unit Halfords had into an 18 year old pick up a couple years ago that only dropped signal over long journeys but found itself. I thought the works DAB was rubbish due to the electronics being fiddled with and extra radios installed maybe causing interference. Having now got my own Skoda Octavia, I can confirm, it's just a bit rubbish...

I also have problems with my vrs 2016 Dab radio always losing signal, and sometimes the next station different?

My experience seems different to most people.

On my 2013 Insignia the DAB was useless. The sound was dead compared to FM, and often cut out, with no switching to FM.

On my my16.5 VRS (with MIB2) the DAB was excellent. Whenever the DAB signal cut it would switch to FM and back seamlessly . No discernible difference in sound quality.

On my my19 VRS (with MIB2) the DAB is still excellent, and the signal is stronger - I'm able to keep listening to local stations further away than in my old VRS

That said, once within the last few weeks there was an issue with DAB on a Sunday morning, so I switched to FM manually

I have a Pure 600 DAB+ , which as a + has improves signal reception capabilities.

But still suffer in areas of poor signal strength, hope should improve from 2020 when FM frequency begin shutting and be completely shut down by 2024.

That's what government has in place.

That schedule has been put on hold, the BBC now states:

Quote

In March 2018 the BBC said it will continue to use FM for the forseeable future. Bob Shennan, director of radio and music at the corporation, was quoted by BBC News as saying: “We need to do more in the UK before we consider a switch-over and for that to be genuinely led by the audience. We are fully committed to digital and we believe we should review the landscape again in a few years’ time.”

DAB is an ancient, inefficient and poor quality protocol. DAB+ is newer and better, but still quite old. A DAB+ receiver will not give any benefit unless radio stations start transmitting in DAB+, which shows no sign of happening any time soon and will not be compatible with DAB receivers, which is why there is the reluctance to change.

No it isn't, no it won't and no it doesn't.
