Breather Pipes?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

So I have just replaced the map sensor on the 1.2 as the engine was rocking about like a don’t know what.

Much to my disgust I then found two split air hoses. I can’t seem to find replacement parts online though. So I was hoping someone might be able to tell me where I can get them or what piping I can replace them with?

As you can see I’ve made a boj job of trying to stop them leaking so much air by wrapping them in tape  you know engineering at its finest.

If if anyone can help I appreciate it.

Thanks

Mike

Part number is printed on the hose at regular intervals.

That's the brake servo pipe and it's very common for them to split where yours has.

What's your engine code and year of car?

I don’t know the engine code tbh I really need to check it lol. It’s a 1.2 6v 56 plate if that’s any help.

I thought it was a breather for the brake servo but it’s been some time since I actually did anything under the bonnet of a car.

Looks like part number 6Q2612041AK to me.

Spot on just had a quick look online and it’s identical than you. May have found it earlier had I thought it was a vacuum pipe lol.

thanks very much

No probs :) Just have a check at the number on your old pipe as Wino says.

Will do, better safe than sorry. I’ll check whilst I’m searching the engine bay for the old map sensor I dropped  haha

So I’ve checked the part number and it is indeed 6Q2612041AK. Can anyone suggest a reputable source to find one?

All my local spares dealers are saying no or 2-3weeks which seems ridiculous in fact I’ve never heard that on anything I’ve asked for before. Are these pretty rare now?

if not is there any reason I can’t replace the just the hose with normal vacuum piping of the correct diameter?

Thanks again

Email Mike via [email protected] and ask him for a quote for that part number.

Include your reg number or VIN so he can treble-check the part number (he'll want to  do so, even though we are probably very confident that it's right).

He's always given me good prices, and excellent service.

You could try just cutting off the split parts, heating the end with a hair drier or similar and pushing them back on to the spigots, in the meantime, or instead of spending ~£40.

The new replacements feature exactly the same materials as far as I can judge by the markings on them, which is disappointing considering how inadequate it appears to be as a design.

One side is on a bend though and there doesn't look much room to cut the pipe and refit it. And I think the pipe would also become too short to fit once you'd done both ends.

Thanks for the input again guys.

It’s gotta be new pipe one way or another as the splits are fairly long and the pipe is well past it’s sell by date. It’s rock hard all the way along.

I’ll be doing the console bushes and wishbones tomorrow so I’m going to see if I can get the hoses off the connectors and if I can order some pipe. If not I’ll email Mike about a oem part.

Ive got a feeling this won’t be the last split hose I find on this car though :wondering:

They are meant to be hard, the new one will be the same. Obviously not meant to be split though :tongueout:

Really? I’m used to vacuum pipes being sort of hard and sort of flexible but not so hard that they feel brittle enough to just snap at any moment lol.

Yeah, this type is hard plastic stuff. I renewed mine a few years ago - it wasn't split but the non-return valve was failing causing my brakes to suddenly lose servo assistance, which was 'interesting' to say the least!

I bet that was scary, I had a similar situation in my classic mini once... I actually think some poo came out :D

Yes, more flexible ones seemed to last better. I bet there are thousands of VW group cars on the road with these pipes just about to completely fall off. I've witnessed a couple of drastic ones recently, just amongst friends and neighbours.

Yeah this sounds like a fairly big issue yet I've not come across this when trawling through the forums before.

Haha

It's a disgusting state of affairs when it's something so safety critical.  Just shouldn't happen.

Wino that's pretty shocking to be honest. I never realised it before but you can hear the air escaping from the split pipes inside the cabin. I dread to think how long this has actually been the case on our Fabia we have had for 4 years and I've only just started paying attention to since the bushes started to squeak and the a coil pack decided die.

TMB I surprised that it isn't something that has had at least a warning issued about it from VW group.

Indeed. They should have revised the pipes but doesn't appear they've done anything about it (as far as I know).

By the way, (hours) prior to starting the console bush job, squirt some (lots of) penetrating fluid into the far end of the tapped holes in the consoles that the front wishbone bolts go into.  It's not unheard of for these bolts (especially if they have been re-used before) to pick up material off the aluminium console thread and jam up on the way out. You end up wrecking the console if you keep graunching them out. I think you can imagine how I know. Sorry to be a 'catastrophist', but forewarned is forearmed, and penetrating fluid is quick and easy.
