Wino that's pretty shocking to be honest. I never realised it before but you can hear the air escaping from the split pipes inside the cabin. I dread to think how ling this has actually been the case on our Fabia we have had for 4 years and I've only just started paying attention to since the bushes started to squeak and the a coil pack decided die.

TMB I surprised that it isn't something that has had at least a warning issued about it from VW group.

I think member @rum4mo has referred to a recall (or at least a tech bulletin?) on this issue, but limited to just some models of some VW brands, over a limited production time period. I'm sure he will be along in due course to confirm/deny/elaborate.

By the way, (hours) prior to starting the console bush job, squirt some (lots of) penetrating fluid into the far end of the tapped holes in the consoles that the front wishbone bolts go into.  It's not unheard of for these bolts (especially if they have been re-used before) to pick up material off the aluminium console thread and jam up on the way out. You end up wrecking the console if you keep graunching them out. I think you can imagine how I know. Sorry to be a 'catastrophist', but forewarned is forearmed, and penetrating fluid is quick and easy.

Thanks for the advise not heard about that to be honest. I have however invested in a proper tool for removing and installing the bushes without removing the console so fingers crossed its going to be straight forwards... ish lol. I've got fresh wishbones, Drop links and Arb rubbers to do whilst I'm at it whilst its apart. So a full morning ahead of me haha. The only other thing then will be the rear end which shouldn't be as difficult but I'll hold off on that until I've got fresh dampers springs and mounts to go on.

Thne funny thing is that I've had exactly the same types of servo pipe on other makes of car and never had one split. Wonder why it only seems to be VAG as you'd think whatever the pipes are made of would be pretty much the same.

There's not usually anything wrong with the wishbones themselves, but I guess it's a bit late to mention that.  Which type of bush have you bought to fit into the consoles?

I think that the vac pipes I would be mentioning would be a previous version which was “old school” heavily reinforced “rubber” piping which had a textured look on the surface, it ended up aging too quickly and became rock solid, so got replaced with this next generation of vac piping which has a shiny smooth outer surface.

Yeah as I have been trawling through ebay I noticed there was a lot of similar pipes. Id much rather have something new rather than second hand though especially in this case.

To be honest I don't think there will be anything with the wishbones them selves, it was just a case of for the price and effort of replacing the bushes on the wish bones and then replacing the ball joint etc and I basically got them two for one from a friend in the industry I thought bugger it get all new.

The bushes are just the standard ones. Having done some reading it would appear that I would have been better off getting some Cupra ones as they are better but you know, you live and you learn lol. For the price and something to do I'm not bothered about getting back under the car. Plus I'm falling a little bit in love with this car and I'm beginning to get an itch so I may have to purchase my self a vRS at some point in the future so everything is useful information now.

If that means the single, central rubber web up and down from the central hex, just don't do it.

Get and fit the X-type ones, with two diagonal webs above/below. I'll pop up a photo in a sec when I find one.

Going back to the plastic piping, I wonder if the manufacturer of that piping approves the way that VW Group fit parts with normal barbs of that size into it?

Do you mean as in why are they trying to get something that big into something so small?

Pretty sure me and the misses had a conversation like that once :wondering: or I may have dreamt it haha :D

We'll never know.

Yeah, definitely.

On the subject of console voided/nonvoided bushes, while the Cupra solid, ie nonvoided versions are the best plan, I think that they can be harder to pull/press into the consoles, so might destroy your nice new tool.

Okay maybe I'll steer clear of those for now then... Id much rather it just stopped squeaking for now plus the car doesn't get much hammer she only uses it to take the youngest to nursery and ferry herself to the gym and back lol.

Seen plenty the same on other car makes though. I don't think it's that that causes the problem, I reckon it's down to the material the pipe is made of.

The car that I got the slightly torn standard bushes replaced on was a 1.4 75PS Polo that usually was used by my wife driving to work, the reason for fitting Cupra bushes was to solve the tearing bushes for once and for all, in that context they worked perfectly, the improved feel to the steering was a bonus!

What ever it is I’ve got will be going on this morning.

Not because I can’t be bothered but because I’m actually using a friends drive to do this as I’m currently still digging ours out between been at uni and then having kid duties lol.

i think the cupra ones might be what we go for later on and I’ll probably change them when I do the dampers springs and top mounts.

thanks though guys really do appreciate all your input on this! :)

So not actually managed to do anything on the car this morning as the misses is a bit worse for wear so stuck on kid duty all day. The bushes will just have to wait but I might take the chance to order the cupra ones now as they should be here for my next chance to do them.

Ive also managed to get a new vacuum pipe sorted. Thanks to mike at lister group for sorting that out for me very quick response to my email and all done and dusted within about 20 minutes. I’d tag him to say thank you but don’t know his tag on here.

but seriously thank you for sorting this out for me just the way it looks compared to what’s on now is gob smacking.

It will get fitted on Tuesday with the passenger wishbone!

Well this morning was fun... started by attempting to replace the drivers side wishbone to find that the ball joint just would not split. So I started to undo the 13mm bolts for the ball joint and the last one decided it wasn’t coming out so put everything back on and will try and again tomorrow but this time with a hack saw.

that said the dodgy idle is now gone with new vacuum hose in

They often snap if they've been there ages. The part number for the retaining plate is 6N0407175A. The bolts are N10127707

Thanks @TMB I’ve actually got completely new wishbones going on so I’ve got them already which is why it was so annoying that I didn’t have anything to cut through the bolt at the same time.

Its all good practise for when my student finance drops in September and I invest in a vrs as I’ll be poly bushing the crap out of it haha!

Ah, cool :)

I bought a set of these a while back, and love them.  If you look at a bolt and the exposed end looks like it's going to give trouble as it winds back through the nut/thread, you just spanner one of these onto it with a bit of oil or grease for lube, and it cleans all the rust away nicely.  Wire brushing never quite seems to do enough, in my experience.
