Water loss TFSI engine

Featured Replies

Yesterday a warning light came up on my Kodiaq dashboard indicating a low coolant level.

On inspection of the coolant expansion reservoir It appeared empty.

So I called Skoda Assist who sent an AA man out.

He diagnosed the problem as a leak from the thermostat housing to the right of the engine. A small puddle of water could be seen the top of the gearbox casing.

Apparently this is according to the AA man a common problem on this type of engine as the housing is made of plastic and warps.

Vehicle being checked at local Skoda dealers tomorrow.

Has anyone heard of this problem with this engine?

I did with my Octavia RS.  Water pump replaced under warranty.  Certainly not uncommon.

Coolant warnings and low coolant levels within the first few thousand miles / months is pretty common across a lot of VAG models.

Airlocks from production eventually work their way out of the system. Once topped up then the issue usually never materialises again.

Leaks, at least on the Kodiaq are still very rare, at least on here, but if the guy from the AA see's it quite regularly its good to know.

I assume you mean TSI and not TFSI?

Which TSI engine do you have, the 1.4, 1.5, 2.0 180PS or 2.0 190PS?

The leaking water pump saga on the MkIII Octavia was widespread, and therefore very well documented and widely known.

Thanks. Diagnosed as water pump seal. Although I have my doubts as AA man found water on right of engine. Water pump is on left?? Noticed liquid on my drive this morning on right. Tomorrow will tell!

Sorry it’s a 1.4 TSI

I know someone who's Q5 is booked in for a new thermostat housing.

Common problem it seems. 2 litre petrol.

Water pump seal is a common failure on these I believe there is a TPI available for this for seal being knicked during production
