Tips on removing fog lamp surround?

Featured Replies

The weekend is here and I feel like taking a dremel tool to ABS plastic!:D

Has anyone got any tips on how to carefully remove the Fog Lamp surround so that I can get going with a Pikey mod?

I dont want to wreck anything, and there few things as fun as sitting at the kitchen table with a humming tool carving away at stuff. (always done when SWMBO is out....)

Just pull it towards you.

However try and keep the pull even between both sides of the grill, so it doesn't twist and put undue strain on the fog lamp.

It's held in by 3 tabs at the top and bottom. Gently squeeze the bars together and ease it outwards.

If you can figure out how to remove the foglight itself without taking the bumper off, please let us know.

I used a hacksaw on mine, took about 5 minutes. Not sure you will notice any benefit, but as Tesco say "every little helps" :)

just pull it will you , done the mod to the o/s trim this week with a sharp craft knife (mind your fingers) i.e. extra slots to the left of the foglamp , to allow more air to intercooler ,will cut the wheel arch liner at the weekend to allow the air out

I know some time ago there was some discussion about putting mesh in as well to avoid a stone hitting the i/c

nothing hit my I/C in 30,000 miles of spirited driving :)

But you might want to do it to be safe, but then your kind of impeding airflow in which case why cut the damn thing in the 1st place

Cheers everyone:thumbup:

Mod is complete - I pulled out the foglamp surround straight out, and then using some thumb pressure on the three tabs inside, popped out the painted central section on top, leaving just the relevant ABS bit to cut into. Marked out the slots from inside and out, leaving a 3mm rim near the clip points, up to the base of the fins on the outside.

Cut the holes with a dremel, using "chain drilling" (basically putting a series of small holes in a line). The fine conical tip of the dremel went through like a hot knife through butter.

Final finishing was with some careful filing, with masking tape on the bits that I didn't want to get scratched.

Finally cleaned out the little fuzzies of ABS using a lighter from underneath.

All popped very easily back in place after a wiping with a wet rag to provide some lubrication to the plastic tabs. (I should have thought of this when I took it out)

SWMBO couldn't tell that I had done anything to the piece afterwards (I didn't show it to her before).

(Obsessive, who's obsessive?:D )

Next weekend, roll on the TT liner mod....(I can't decide whether to use black self-tapping drywall screws in undersized holes or to pop-rivet and paint the rivets black:confused: )

just done my wheel arch liner this a.m. marked approx 10 ,120mm horizontal lines 20mm apart then marked 2 lines 20mm apart down the middle of the horizontal lines , then sliced the liner with a craft knife (watch them fingers) , then with the use of a heat gun and a screwdriver i gently warmed the liner and opened up the slices to make slots , ala steel storage cabinet door vents , so what i end up with is 2 rows of slots that shouldn't allow too much crap through off the tyre  if i knew how to get pictures on this post i would be able to show you the finished job:confused:

Wow, that sounds a little too advanced for me!! - I think I'll stick to just hacking out a hole and glueing/rivetting a TT spacer in.

Cheers,

Bas
