MK1 FABIA 1.4 16v Stalling / EPC / EML

Featured Replies

I have started a new post about this ongoing problem!  CAR is a 52 plate MK1 FABIA 1.4 16v comfort ..... Stalling / EPC & EML  :wall:

It is not a Brake light  ABS or brake switch problem, there is something  more sinister going on somewhere in the engine / engine management  department!

.......... So having changed the break light sensor and driving it around for two days I thought I had possibly sorted the problem as advised!

Unfortunately this hasn't resolved the issue!!

Today once again  the  EPC Light - engine management light and traction control light came on the dash,  followed by a complete and embarrassing stall at a roundabout.

Hazards on! Engine refuses to start, after several try's turning the engine over no joy!!

I then left the car ignition off for 5 minutes then tried again and off she goes driving fine with the engine management and EPC lights on the dashboard.

Stopped for 30 mins car starts and drives fine with the engine management light on for the rest of the journey (20miles).

I have just borrowed a very basic OBD11 reader and its showing 3 fault codes!

2x P0106 Which according to the book is MAP / BARO CKT Range / Performance

1X P0170 Fuel Trim Malfunction (Bank 1)

Any ideas anyone??

My better half is now refusing to drive the car!  :wall:

Thanks in advance P

When it stops does the starter motor actually turn or is it completely dead, no noise at all?

Starter motor turns over it just refuses to fire up at all until its had a rest for 5 mins or so!

Have you checked the strip fuses on top of the battery? They can develop tiny cracks that can make intermittent contact and could conceivably be affected by temperature.

Could be the MAP sensor too.

Cheers for that, that's one for the daytime tomorrow!

I will have a good check over

When this problem 1st happened last August whilst under warranty,  Apparently they changed the MAP sensor.

My thoughts are with the fuel system...... fuel filter or fuel pump........ but I am clutching at straws!

Process of elimination I suppose, (cheapest 1st!)

Yeah it's just that you said they replaced the MAF sensor but I presume they must have meant MAP sensor.

  • Author

I presumed as well I will have a check, I believe this model doesn't have a MAF but has a MAP...... so not quite sure if they where spinning me a yarn!

Yeah this is the problem if someone else is doing it, you only have their word for it.

Check for air leaks in the brake servo vacuum line.

I will have a look over the car in daylight  tomorrow, is there an effective way to test for air leaks other than a visual check?

Try pulling it off the barbs, if it's split it'll come off easily.

I have checked the vacuum lines they appear to all be in good order, I sprayed soapy water along them to double check all seems fine!

I have checked the battery strip fuses, again all appears as it should.

The fuel filter looks like it hasn't been changed for a while so I will order one of those.

Its just really annoying as car is fine this morning like nothing ever happened no lights or anything!!

My Missus has nicknamed it "Christine"!!

UPDATE! I took out the MAP sensor to check the condition, it appears to be a brand new VAG one so the dealer did put a new one on!

Whilst the cover was off,  I have checked and cleaned the camshaft sensor and re checked the vacuum hoses again.

No visible signs of anything out of the ordinary!!

Gremlins!!

Low battery...…...or bad connections

to get the traction control light to light up must be a 03ABS module fault code to trip it...…& low battery will do it...

  • Author

Mmmmm Ill nip the connections up tomorrow, would illuminating the traction control EPC / EML lights be enough to put it in limp mode / stall?

We had just gone over some speed bumps, could a faulty abs wheel sensor be at fault?

However saying that it happened recently going onto a motorway on a smooth road!

Cheers P

It's worth removing the battery earth lead at the strut turret, cleaning it and putting it back just to rule it out as it can cause all manner of problems if it's not making good contact.

 Will do.... Tomorrow.

UPDATE 2 ...... The Breakdown Saga continues!

So this week I have been tinkering with "Christine" the Fabia!

Firstly I checked then re checked all the electrics.

Then I changed the fuel filter, one of the push fit connectors was not very happy coming off it would not release and therefore didn't like going back on, possible problem, I wasn't happy about this I like my cars mechanically sound,  so I managed to locate a breakers and replace the blue nylon fuel pipe. whilst I was there I also got another cam sensor to try.

I fitted all these parts and thought I had finally cracked the issue, then the dreaded 7.15am call off the missus the car had cut out on a major traffic light junction at rush hour!!

I have had the motor all day today and again the same issue with the same codes

P0106

P0170

EPC light, traction control and engine management lights up on the dash a few seconds later everything shuts down, refuses to start! Leave her for 5 mins re-start, car struggles to turn over like fuel starvation, finally fires, splutters and stalls, eventually after several attempts at this it primes itself and fires into life and off she goes, drives fine and engine management light stays on until left over night.

I am trying to work out the pattern, the only thing I am seeing is that it always stalls once up to correct operating temp but it is random, but now happening daily!

.......Where do I go from here EGR valve / pipework ~ Fuel pump relay ~ Fuel pump ~ Crankshaft sensor ~ coolant sensor ~ ABS wheel sensors!

I am now just throwing money at it now ....she's lost faith and just wants rid of it now!

Cheers P

............ Same again today!!

UPDATE UPDATE So if anyone is interested, yesterday I stripped down and cleaned the EGR valve, the pipework and the thottle body.

The pipe that goes from the valve to throttle body and the throttle body where caked in carbon deposits mainly at the end of the pipe and underneath the throttle body.

Evidence of similar bodged work where evident here, such as mismatched bolts etc. I have fully rebuilt and sealed correctly now also replaced all the spark plugs and cleared all the codes.

Its running sweet for now, we'll see how she goes!!

"Christine"comes back to life! .....

So for those concerned I have been monitoring the progress of 'Christine'!

After the same issue re-occuring I did some more research.

The issue possibly appears to have been stemming from the cold air valve flap inside the engine cover, this flap is designed for extreme cold conditions to open and allow hot air into the intake to stop the throttle body icing up!

When I dismantled the cover I found  that this flap was stuck half open! Hence allowing very high temperature intake air into the system, causing the issue.

So yes the issue was EGR related, however allowing the intake air in too hot constantly was more likely throwing up the codes and causing the engine to stall and stop.

I have now disconnected this flap reversed it and sealed it up. Unless our British weather drops to minus 20 I think it should be okay now!

Something seemingly so small playing havoc!

Fingers crossed its solved!

I always like to report back to help others.

Cheers P
