Skoda Superb faulty EGR

Featured Replies

Hi! New in here, and got some trouble with my wife's Superb. Got the motorlamp in the dash, and the lamp for the glowing starts blinking after som driving at low speed, and then the car goes in limp mode. At the highway the car don't goes in limp mode if i drive in 80km/t. Got some faultcodes from VCDS, that says malfunction on EGR Valve N18. Will post picture of this code, will post some pictures of the values on the egr, after i take some test on the valve today. Sorry for my bad english, but hope you guys understand!

Welcome to Briskoda B)

It's time for a new EGR I'm afraid...

Not sure what happened in Norway with regards to the Volkswagen Audi Group's (VAG) emissions scandal. Has your car been recalled by Skoda to have the EA189 emissions fix?

If so, then hopefully Skoda Norway also offer a 'Trust Building Warranty' like Skoda UK...

I was able to get my failing EGR replaced for free on my 2011 Skoda Superb.

I'm afraid of that too.. Could it just be that the valve is full of dirt?

The car hasn't got the EA189 emissions fix, since VW here in Norway says that the car have to be in perfect conditions before they will do it.. So i think i have to replace the valve first. I know there have been some issues with the egr after updating, and some of them have got the egr on warranty here in Norway.

Luckily, when my EGR failed, the fault and the accompanying Engine Management Light (EML) were intermittent.

I booked the car in for the EA189 emissions fix, cleared the fault / EML round the corner, dropped the car in at the dealer for the emissions fix.

Of course, as expected, on my home the EML came back on, left it a few days and then booked it back in for a new EGR for free, under the 'Trust Building' warranty.

It might be possible to clean the EGR, if it's coked up, but the EGR on the Superb is also known to suffer water ingress. Either way cleaning the EGR isn't an easy job. Once it's off the car to clean it (properly), its as easy to fit a new one.

I was wondering about the same, just clear all the fault codes, and then book the car for the EA189 emissions fix, and hope that the lamps in the dash didn't come up before they where finished!

I was thinking the same, when the EGR is off the car, it's easy to fit a new one, but expensive..

Not very honest, but it saved me close to £1,000 GBP. Skoda UK have had their money out of me over the years!

.. And it will save me for around 18000NOK, around £1700 GBP here in Norway!

Ouch, sounds like it be worth sitting in your car with a laptop computer and VCDS outside the Skoda dealer then! :D

To "Fagerdaal" - For around £1700 you can phisically disconnect the indicator lamp on the dashboard just for sure not to blink in the car service office..

Could i disconnect the indicator lamp via VCDS?

To "Fagerdaal" - I think - No. Only phisically :(

Even if you do remove the LED from the cluster, the car will still be in limp mode...

You can have the EGR mapped out which will stop the warning light and limp mode but may be against various regulations in your country.

I'd second silvers plan, check the car still meet the 'trust building measure' criteria and assuming it does, get the fix applied and get Skoda to replace the EGR. You can probably have the fix removed for less than the cost of an EGR afterwards.

"  You can have the EGR mapped out which will stop the warning light and limp mode but may be against various regulations in your country. "

Or you can purchase one of these, then still be easily able to revert back to the EGR at a later date, & probably cheaper & no limp mode :-

You will still have the problem that the engine will be putting out more NOx, but I guess it will be polluting more now anyway.

But go with the emissions fix first if you can.

I had similar case with my faulty EGR, try to fix it with EA189 or fully cover these costs by myself. I choosed second optio, as I bought new OEM EGR from offial dealer and works has done in non-official service.

OEM EGR with different seals was 400€ and labor cost was 150€ - not extreme expensive imo.

How "easy" is it to get the EGR valve out of this car (or CFGB) and clean it?

Is it possible for a "normal" person with "normal" tools to do this or does the engine have to be removed?

Is it a good idea to clean the EGR valve on your own as a precaution?

To "mbgar" - If the "Superb" is 4x4 - it is very hard to remove the "EGR". For front wheel drive "Superb" it is much easier.

@tuningmania

Yes it is front only, are there some tutorials or videos how to do it?

would it be "wise" to do it your own or could one break something easily?

You can download the service manuals from https://erwin.skoda-auto.cz/erwin/showHome.do An hour's subscription is less than a tenner and you'll have all the information you need. You need to remove the DPF assembly to get to the EGR valve, which adds a lot to the labour time. If you know what you're doing it's probably doable yourself but give yourself a full day to do it.

The only reliable way to clean the EGR valve is to remove it and poke the gunk out of it. If you're that far in, replacement is relatively cheap for the peace of mind it brings.

If you're worried about impending EGR failure, the cheapest option is have the EA189 emissions update carried out and take advantage of the Trust Building Measure when the EGR dies.

It's a 4x4 i have here.. And yes, it is a lot of work to take the egr out of the car. I saw one video of a guy doing this on youtube, on a Superb 4x4.

  • 1 month later...

Found something "new". An "EGR Simulator".

Plugs between EGR-ECU and Mass FLow and ECU, comes with blanking plate if EGR is faulty.

No remap needed.

I'd be wary of an EGR delete or EGR simulator on a car with a DPF as it's likely to cause you more issues...

Darkside developments website states: The EGR Valve CANNOT be removed on vehicles that still have the DPF Filter present, doing so would soon block the DPF.

These guys did it without a ramp, hats off to them:
