Time to say goodbye / watch out for it!

Featured Replies

Well, after almost 5 years and 130k miles my (company) car, it was time to say goodbye to the vRS as its been changed for a new R line passat estate on Verona's. Its a lovely car, quieter but slightly less exciting than even the tdi vRS (but we have the golf R for weekends anyway). I considered a Karoq but did want virtual cockpit, needed ACC and DSG tdi but need to be in stock/docks or ex demo (this was a unicorn, even though they are all options). Another vRS was an option but fancied something different and also i find the electronic handbrake and DSG works well in the VW.

Anyhow, the company sold the vRS to 'we buy any car', obviously pretty cheap as they can never be bothers selling them privately - so if anyone sees it turn up on forecourt in a week or two and is thinking about buying it, drop me a line and i can let you know the true history (its had a good but fairly tough life but is probably ok at the right price!) - black vRS estate, reg WF64AHD.

So having had two octavia's, now moved on to two VW's - probably lurk around here though as the forums definitely don't seem as good!

Which engine in Passat?

You should have offered to buy if off your company for the same price as WBAC offered, valeted it to within an inch of its life and sold it privately for a tidy profit.

It's on British Car Auctions website at the Blackbush site, grade 4 going for auction 13th May.

You need to be logged in, and search for the specific make & model car.

Only 2.0 tdi 150, so not rapid but its a different style of motoring for me during the week. The vRS to be fair was not that far off the pace of the golf R but having too 'sporty' cars didn't make too much sense after we got the golf.

£5005 i believe. I could have had it but i think it needs too much work to get to standard i'd be happy selling on.

The plus points with it were it has a few options (it was ex demo, so 2 owners to date) - Canton, Columbus, leather seats, power boot, black pack. It was also on fixed services, so serviced regularly (probably at least 3 times a year).

The minus points,

  • it really needs a full blow over, virtually every panel had stone chip/flaking paint from chip/tar and/or dent  (one on the roof also), and drivers door had a 'ripple' someone did it in a car park when i wasn't there.
  • Paint was coming off one of the rear calipers also.
  • Oil use and dpf regens - skoda reckon that 1L / 1000 miles was in tolerance, but it was often using much more than this (no external leaks) and it was doing regens a lot even after long/hot runs - some theory oil burning off from the dpf?
  • DAB on the radio went missing - skoda reckoned £2700 to replace the media unit - it seemed to burn out in last years hot weather (its possible someone could repair the tuner unit but skoda wouldn't touch it).
  • NSF suspension, i caught it on a kerb and the castor was very slightly out according to digital tracking ( but there were no tyre wear issues)
  • Lane assist, needs re-calibration/doesn't work
  • Usual corroding on the wheels and kerb rash.
  • 'Workshop error put in P' issue - didn't get fix prior to warranty expiry so never got fixed (£900+ for new selector) but it never actually caused an issue.
  • Needs need OS door mirror cover/surround (it in place but cracked where someone caught it in the lanes)

Don't get me wrong it was a great car, never let me down and despite the above i did try to look after it. It moved us to our new house and brought my daughter home from being born etc, so am sorry to see it go but it was time to change. It could be a good car for someone but would need to be at the right price for a car with 127k miles on it.

Interesting. What does grade 4 mean (knackered?) - do you find out what it goes for?

Grade 4 ain't brilliant tbh, but with people buying sight unseen online the slightest ding or scuff has to be photographed & declared, grade 5 is the worst usually reserved for Mobility tatt & finance repo,s with doors/wings/roofs/wheels missing.....

Probably a fair assumption on grade given the above then. My concern for anyone buying remotely, is they don't get to see things like the DAB isn't working etc, but i guess this is generally trade and about the risk and opportunity.

I was going to say that mechanically, having high mileage, but being on fixed service intervals it should be in good nick.

But a litre of oil every 1,000 miles? That would be an extra £150 a year in top-up oil alone on my mileage!

If oil was leaking past the turbo, into the exhaust and being burned off by the DPF (extra regenerations), then you'd see the smoke out of the tailpipes.

Sounds like you got rid just in time. The risk of buying at auction.

It's also 'lost' one of its 2 owners! Op says it was demo + him, advert says 1 keeper

One keeper is the original owner (demo) and the current name on the log book as the current owner. One previous owner is correct I'm this respect. Once the vehicle is sold and the log book changed  then it'll say 2 previous owners.

Ha ha - and I thought only it was only the Arthur Daley types could come up with that logic.

The original owner ran it as a demo. The 2nd owner WAS ExeterJ.  ExeterJ is not the current owner of the car. The car has had two previous owners.

...This looks a fun post. Wonder if someone has been caught with their pants down or if the mileage o.p.  stated was a guide and wonder if all the faults have been fixed or (Ahem) Botched to sell!

Sounds like the seller could be in for a sh1te load of warranty claims. Perhaps they get paid by the insurer who covers this, to fix things? Just wondering!

Makes one wonder how often a pigs ear gets turned into a silk purse and how long that sold lasts, prior to turning back into a sow's lughole!

The log book will show "1 previous owner" that's what the seller is legally selling it as. The current owner (still ExeterJ) is also on the log book as the current owner as the vehicle is in the trade so no updated owner details until it's sold to a retail customer.

It's had 2 owners, but currently only one is previous.

@DaveLees It was stated in a slightly later post that it had covered 127k miles but yes, still 5000 miles missing.

Either just a memory glitch on the op's behalf, or more likely a typo in the advert I suspect.

Typical rip off 'mark up', and i'd be surprised if they've done much to it apart from a good fettle.

If they've done, or intend to do two to two and a half grands worth of work on the car then fair enough.........

I've had a few Passat's.

Agree refinement is on a different level and DSG with Autohold is a match made in heaven. It doesn't use the electric handbrake though but VAG only include Autohold on models with electric handbrake.

Let's go back a generation to when ExeterJ purchased the car.  According to your logic, when he bought it, the car had no previous owner?  According to my logic the only car that has had no previous owner is one that's brand new, not used.

Never in my life have I seen a used car for sale stating no previous owners.

If you look on a new V5 for any brand new car you'll see it shows the number of previous owners as nil, and the current owner is the first owner and is named on that V5 as such. This would be the "Demo" cars state.

ExeterJ buys the car with Zero previous owners, transfers the V5 into his name and the new V5 comes back with one previous owner, because it's had one previous owner (plus the current owner).

The car is then sent into the trade when ExeterJ sells it, where it remains in his name (despite being sold to a dealer, sold to WBAC, sold through the auctions, bought by the current owner Top Cars in Birmingham apparently) and still shows  on the V5 as "One previous owner" because until the V5 is transferred away from the current owners name (ExeterJ) then that's what it states on the V5.

It hasn't magically losy any owners, no one has removed any previous owners from DVLA's databaase, it's simply that until someone new registers the car in their name the V5 will show as 1 previous owner.

Don't believe me? Take a look at your V5, or anyone elses who you know the cars history, and see how many previous owners it has on it. I'm the second owner of my Yeti and also my Tiguan, but the V5 states quite rightly that it's had 1 previous owner, and that previous owner had the V5 stating 0 previous owners.

To be exact, since July last year DVLA have removed the previous keepers details section for Data Protection reasons. However, the fact remains that the number of previous keepers is still in the same format and will be revealed via an HPI (or similar) check. If you have a V5 from prior to the removal of that section it will show as I said.

Trade sellers do not consider themselves as owners of the vehicles, at least as far as the V5 is concerned.............

As far as they are concerned the garage that used the vehicle as a 'Demo' vehicle is the (One) former keeper.

As far as they are concerned (although sensibly not according to law) the company that the Op worked for is still the current owner, hence not being listed as a former keeper.

Right, but wrong................but right / correct...............I think, Lol.

IMO it is fair that the selling garage is not listed on the V5 as an owner, or former keeper for that matter.

Anyone in the know knows that 'one former keeper', means two owners................It's crafty, but not the worst thing sellers do to sell a vehicle.
