New VRS Owner

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I thought after lurking in the shadows as a guest that i would finally sign up.

This is my first ever VAG car , as I've mostly been Jap, Euro and a BMW owner.

Ive just picked up a 2015 VRS TDI manual in black and i am struggling with the sat nav side of things. The dealer was adamant that the car came with sat nav even though it doesn't have a dedicated button on the infotainment system. I did get the full SD car with sat nav for 2015 with the car CW22/2015. I can see that it shows on the screen under media but it is Greyed out.

just to rule out corrupt software I've pulled the data off the card and reinstalled it. Ive seen that a couple of posts state that my car year/radio doesn't have the sat nav included. Ive also checked the update portal which shows no map updates for my the bolero system mine has.

Just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction as to what i have to do.

Thats the first part :) .

The second is Stage 1 custom remap ( I'm not looking at creating a debate as I'm not interested in TB) are the clutch from the manual built to take the power or can i expect an expense a few months down the line ?.

Overall I'm very happy with the car, just not happy from where i bought it from , they misplaced the mats and forgot to tell me the wheels had all been curbed. they are however putting half the money too to get the worst fixed.

thanks for the help in advance.

Ash

  • Quick update, Smart link has been fitted. Absolutely quality bit of kit, even if you dont use the navigation on your phone but your like me and forever listening to spotify. It allows you to change pl

  • The car is a low example with 26k on it, it apparently has recently been serviced at 25k with all the filters but doesn't say anything about the oil. As such i will be getting Millers Oil put in. used

I'm not 100% sure (more like 99%) but I don't think the Bolero has Nav, nor any of the GPS hardware required to allow Nav to function.

The clutch will probably last a reasonable amount of time but they're supposedly not as well equipped to deal with the torque as the DSGs - hence some 'off the shelf' maps/tuning boxes are configured to have a slightly lower peak torque figure for manual cars. A lot will depend on how you drive it too - if you keep flooring it at peak torque, you'll probably find the clutch lasts less time.

I had a feeling as much as i test drove multiple VRS before i settled for this one. The last i test drove had two SD slots and a dedicated Nav button, where as mine only has one and no CD.

I think there was some sort of 'official' upgrade that could be added, that used some Kenwood hardware and Garmin mapping but I doubt the car has this.

In theory it's possible to swap out the components to add an updated MIB unit and Amundsen or Columbus head unit but will cost a bit and need some coding to get it working. If you read through some of the recent posts in her thread, @SashaGrace has done this twice now I think.

Ive just had a quick read of the thread and seen the costs included with it , its not imperative that i have sat nav as i have a tom tom and Waze on my phone. It's more the point that the dealership have taken advantage of me not having a skoda before and stating that it came with sat nav to big up the sale.

Just waiting for the SD card to update and will give it a spin to see if it does actually work.

If it’s a Bolero it will not have nav absolutely no question. It needs to be an Amundsen or a Columbus. Unfortunately, it’s your responsibility as the customer to check the spec is as listed but you could always go back and try for some extras out of the dealer for mis listing the car as adding the nav is costly. Whether it’s a big deal to you in terms of that as an added extra is irrelevant, you may get something if you complain which makes up for it somewhat.

I don't think the Bolero from that era was capable of SATNAV.

Mention it, you might get the full cost of repairs on your kerbed wheelset out of it

I totally understand, I rarely use the incar stuff as i find it out of date and like my real time traffic alerts.

*rechecked the sd card and it still shows it greyed out so guess I don't have it.

Also added pictures, and how bad the paint was on the car.

That’s a MIB2 Bolero, great news, it will have SmartLink for Android Auto/Apple CarPlay/MirrorLink which is better than the factory nav anyway. If that’s not been activated it’s £137 but if it’s not activated you can use the fact that the car was advertised with nav as leverage for a free/discounted activation :)

Not sure why it would have the nav tab at all because it shouldn’t, it doesn’t have the nav hardware.

Yeah, no sat nav on a Bolero unless the previous owner installed an aftermarket Kenwood system and didn't change the button. Keep the Media button pressed for a while and see if it does anything, if the Kenwood system is in the car then the sat nav should start, if it does nothing then definitely no sat nav.

Ill go give the media button a press and hold and also check to see if the Smart link works. Thanks for the promptly responses.

There's no Shark Fin on the roof either  ( GPS ) unless there's a after market one fitted internally

So a little bit of an update,

Long press of the media button does indeed do ..... nothing

Smart link is in the options but states that it needs to be unlocked by a dealer. Guess this is the £137 activation that I've seen in your posts sasha ?

Yes it is. If the advert or the dealer told you that this car had sat nav and that was something that you feel you were misled on, go back and argue your case for free/discounted SmartLink activation. Then you can run your phones nav and music streaming through the radio and it’s worth every penny IMO.

Does it run it bit like live link to smart tv's ? so it will piggy back the phones GPS and hardware systems. Seems to be a good concept so will certainly be giving it a go.

Yes via a wired connection. If you have an iPhone it’ll look like this. An Android phone will look different.

Looks like the paint's come up really well after that clean, 3 hours well spent. What products did you use?

Ive created this with the methods, polishes and waxes i used.

It's looking a lot more full of life than when i picked it up. Im hoping that the weather sorts itself out so i can do a full paint correction on it soon instead of just removing some of the swirls. However depending what happens today with the car dealers it may or may not be going back to them if they rant will to sort the wheels/Nav issue.

The Garmin unit is the GVN60 and it is wired into the Bolero head unit using a quadlock extension. I have it on my car (2015 MIB1 Bolero), you should check that it is suitable for the MIB2 Bolero. The dealer may try to charge you about £600, which is outrageous and if this is the case you'd be better going down the retro fit Amundsen or Columbus route. You may be able to argue a deal as the car was advertised with satnav.

If you do go for the GVN60, make sure you ask them to install the latest maps and firmware once it is fitted, as the unit ships with 2015 maps (new cards are £75). Also make sure they install a TMC cable (approx £25) from the unit up the A-pillar.

I've always used Garmin satnavs and I like the system, however remember you will only get map directions on the head unit and not the driver display as you would with the Amundsen and Columbus.

Thanks, that was a good read and provides some inspiration for sure.

Great work on the condition of the Paintwork, huge improvement over the swirly pic.

I put 55k miles on a Leon FR TDI 184PS (shared mechanicals) which I had remapped with a REVO stage 1, very early on (~3k miles on the clock).  I had no issues whatsoever in terms of clutch, mechanicals, ECU, DPF etc etc, absolutely nothing.  I can thoroughly recommend it; it completely transforms the engine and I also noticed improved economy too (~5%)

Now what mileage is yours and what's its service history?  I would defo look for a reputable tuner who will give the car a thorough health/diagnostic check before they do anything; more so when the car has previous owners, as you just can't be sure how it's been driven/maintained.  The remap likely won't cause problems but could easily accelerate/exacerbate underlying issues caused by lack of 'mechanical sympathy' from it's previous owners.  Worse case scenario you may need to replace parts as a pro-active measure.

Higher mileage components may not be able to tolerate the extra torque/bhp as some parts will naturally be nearing the end of their life expectancy but the tuner should be able to advise you of this.    If everything checks out then go for it.
