Retrofitting Amundsen RNS315 - what's needed?

Featured Replies

I've recently bought a 2011 Yeti SE with Bolero and would like to upgrade to a secondhand Amundsen / RNS315.

What do I need to make it look and work just like it was fitted at the factory ?

- GPS antenna  - which one ?

- Bluetooth mic - which one ?

- Do I need a fascia surround - which one?

- Anything else that is different depending on the version of RNS315 I get ?

- Anything to set up to the car?

Thanks !

I have a similar question- I have a 2016 Yeti Outdoor SE 1.2 DSG with the Bolero unit which I would love to replace with the DAB Amundsen unit fitted to the later Drive models. Anyone know if this is a straightforward swap?

@Prezafab - it depends if you want it completely as an original install or not.

If you want to make it more true to the original fitment, you'll probably need a sharkfin and a fakra extension cable, something like these:

- Sharkfin: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/361853121476

- Cable: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/303150610177

Otherwise, you'd probably need these parts:

- aftermarket GPS: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/112953868044

- BT mic + wiring: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200820114979

- Facia: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400843463301

There are plenty of other suppliers and you should check those parts are actually correct for your car before ordering.

Couple of other notes:

- Not all versions support BT, make sure the MAC address sticker does NOT say 00:00:00:00:00:00

- Some versions support DAB (black fakra connector on the rear)

- After fitting, you should get the car and headunit coded using VCDS

- Try and get one with the PIN included

- V9 maps are the latest 'stable' maps, newer versions cause headunits to restart

@tonyvds - You'll have more challenges as newer headunits use component protection (CP).

I think a 2016 Yeti would have a MIB STD2 PQ style Bolero with a single vertical SD slot to the left of the screen. If so, a dealer can probably sort the CP but the satnav will not work as your VIN/car will be missing the right FeC (feature enablement code). I'm not sure if these can be purchased or not.

Instead, you might want to have CP removed and all features enabled by one of many 3rd parties. Pab567 is often mentioned on briskoda so it might be worth dropping them a PM for costs etc.

Thanks very much for the comprehensive response, too much of which is way beyond my understanding for me to tackle. Pab567 here I come!

One thing to note here. Last time I asked this seller, the actual antenna which screws in is not included in the price. You'll need that for Dab radio.

Likewise from me, thanks !  Who or what is  Pab567 and do I need their skills !?

@Prezafab no need to contact pab, the rns-315 doesn't have component protection. All you need is a pin. If the headunit doesn't come with one, plenty of eBay sellers can provide it from the serial number 🙂

Thanks.

I have recently bought the fascia through the briskoda parts people for £25 delivered. Much better than the eBay price!

Is there anyone on here that knows of an experienced, good value fitter if I were to source the unit and the components mentioned above ?

I'm in Milton Keynes.

Sorry if this is a basic question but does the RNS510 fit and talk to the Yeti maxidot ok?

Is it a better alternative to the RNS310/315 if I can get one for similar money, as the car doesnt have Bluetooth either ?

The RNS-510 has a bigger screen and the map updates are easier to find online. There are also no restart issues with the latest map version.

Neither the RNS-310 or RNS-510 have BT built in. They both need a separate external BT module and wiring loom.

As mentioned earlier, some RNS-315 have BT built in but not all. If it doesn't, it'll also need an external BT module.

All three options should work perfectly fine in a yeti.

Bear in mind that the RNS310, RNS315, and RNS510 are all VW units and have different colour button lighting, different colour menu system, and different software which isn't completely compatible with Skodas in some cases. You need to be looking for the Skoda equivalents which are Amundsen (RNS310), Amundsen + (RNS315), and Columbus (RNS510).

Understood re the Skoda side - I would get a Skoda badged model but do I need anything different to make a Columbus work & fit compared with an Amundsen ?

Eg. Is a Columbus with the blue tooth module about the best bet - or is it more complicated to get coded to the car etc ?

If I get these things:-

7P6035730E Columbus with pin card

1Z0798005 Antenna

3T0035681C Bluetooth

I guess I might also need these <or not> but know enough about the installation:-

A Sharkfin of some sort ?

A mic ?

A fascia for the Yeti ?

I basically want to buy everything I need that will work based on your experiences, and then handover to a friendly installer who knows how to set up on Skodas.

There should be no difference in fitting the RNS style Amundsen, Amundsen+ or Columbus. All three use the same connectors and are the same size :)

Anything with a separate BT module will be slightly more work as it'll need wiring and coding. There are plenty of kits that just plug in between the headunit and car wiring to add the extra wiring and connector needed for the BT module. The coding should only be an extra five minutes compared to just a headunit.

All three will need a microphone adding but it'll connect in different places depending it the headunit or BT module are providing bluetooth.

Columbus with a bluetooth kit will be more time consuming to fit, budget a couple if hours (I can do it in about an hour). An Amu dsen + with built in Bluetooth would be half the time.

Amundsen (or even Bolero) MIB STD2 PQ will be much faster and will allow you to use MirrorLink, Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. IMHO it does NOT make any sense to go into old technology units like RNS315 (Amundsen+) or RNS510 (Columbus).

I think you have not came :)

Hi I think I'm losing the plot fitting a Amundsen+ can anyone tell me on the phone function does the Amundsen have a built in mic as i can make a call but they can't hear me ?

@Chickenlickin - there is no microphone builtin to the Amundsen+ (RNS-315), you'll need to add one :)

Thanks but where do you connect it to

To the two mic pins on 'connector c' of the quadlock.

I fitted this item and found the voice problem persisted - I also noted that the cut-out for the microphone was on the passenger side.

I wonder if this is a VCDS settings issue?

Has anyone been able to sort the problem ?

If BT isn't enabled in the headunit, it'll need turning on but after that point, it should just work assume the mic is correct and wired in to the right pins. If it doesn't work, find a local VCDS user to check for fault codes and go from there.

It was a very popular mod on Octavia vRS blacklines as they tended to have a BT capable Amundsen+ but no mic:
