DAB car radio?

Featured Replies

Does anyone have any experience of in car DAB radio? I've seen a lovely Sony MP3/DAB radio head unit which I'm thinking of getting but I've heard conflicting reports - some people say you get more interference with the DAB and it's just not worth the extra hassle of fitting the special aerial and you're better sticking with good old analogue!

I know superted has the Blaupankt DAB53 (IIRC) in his Fabia and all seems to be ok as far as I know. I don't think the aerial was too much of a drama either.

Had a Blaupunkt DAB52 in my octy and its was fine. Just make sure you live in an area with good coverage. I only really had problems with reception in Kent, the rest of the UK was fine.

I believe Kenwood has made the decision to discontinue manufacturing of DAB.

From what I have read, the concensus of opinion among experts is that it is not worth making the change because of reception quality concerns:thumbdwn:

It would be a shame if Kenwood dropped making DAB products, just as the other manufacturers are increasing theirs. Blaupunkt have 2 models in the current lineup, then there is Sony, JVC and Pioneer all having DAB products even Goodmans make a DAB headunit.

I had no reception issues where a signal was available, and across europe DAB is becoming very common. Belgium has total DAB coverage, germany are getting there. France is just starting with coverage in all major cities.

All DAB radios have FM anyway to fall back on to if you loose the DAB signal so all you are doing is future proofing really, there is loads of extra channels and at last for me good quality Virgin reception as it is only on MW where I live.

So that's a reasonably unanimous  then....

I was going to ask if DAB falls back on normal signals if it's unavailable - bit like my 3g phone joins a 2g net if it's out of range - but ias it does I think I'll go for it.

Cheers.
