If you walk into any Halfords and give them your vehicle registration they use that to match the correct quality of oil for your car then you can choose what brand to buy depending on budget. I bought Mobil 1 instead of the recommended Castrol Edge that the dealer supplied.

You'll need to find something with the appropriate VW507.00 marking afaik for your diesel.

May be different viscosities but to the same spec. Quite a few brands over a range of prices and they will be "fully synthetic".

My car uses the same grade yours would; 5w30 vw 507 00 spec.

Halfords search

Might be worth having a check in your local Asda or Tesco. Both of those quite often have a bargain on car oils and fluids. Just make sure it's the above grade.

Thanks, will they all be suitable for long life service intervals or is that standard anyway these days ?

The VW 507 00 is for long life or fixed intervals.

If you're not in need of it desperately, have a look on ebay. You can get 4 litres of Castrol Edge for around £30 delivered. Again, just make sure it says VW 507 in the description.

Thanks for the links and tips. It seems that asda and tesco do the castrol edge for £15 which seems like a good price if they have it in stock at my local store.

I bought  this REPSOL ELITE LONG LIFE 50700/50400 5W-30 car engine oil, from Amazon, to do for top ups in both family cars. Fully synthetic at £10.61 for one litre. I wasn't looking for the cheapest -but seem to have found a good deal.

If you haven't already picked something up, there's advice from an expert here on this very forum, they give a discount with the code Briskoda for forum members:-

What is this Castrol Stop Start oil about? Just to create another market?

supposedly for cars with stop start. Just a marketing thing really. As long as it's the grade which your car needs, it doesn't matter what it's called.

Bought all my oil from them for the last decade or so.

Usually use Motul X-cess on my Honda but that looks like it doesn't meet the 507 spec for VAG so I'll likely use the X-Clean that does.

Have Longlife services carried out by main dealer but buy this stuff for the interim service on my other car:

Longlife

Works out at £5 per litre (delivered), it's supplied by a VAG ( and BMW ) franchise and the same stuff they use to service their vehicles. I've yet to come across a better deal than this.

Guaranteed to keep all Scottish folk happy. Long pockets, short arms.

I've  used Opie oils many times and recommend them.  They do oils I've not found elsewhere.

What's the oil capacity on the vRS 2.0?

Opie Oils seems to sell 6L service packs, however that seems a lot for the engine capacity, so may include some for top-ups?

5.7 Litres.

Christ, that's quite a lot for a 2.0

Mine's on variable intervals, which seems to be demanding a service every 20k or so.

That seems huge... is it realistic?  I usually change my oil every 5k in my Honda, which I know is high due it being a rev happy engine, but I was expecting at least every 10k, surely?

My first service was carried out after 18 months and 18,500 miles. Not used any oil in the 5,000 miles since that service.

Variable means err...  variable. It depends on how car is driven and what environment it's driven in. So it could be every 6k miles, 10k miles, 14k miles. It's the maximum that's 20k ( or 18k or 19k, depending on which VAG manufacturer you listen to) or 2yr - whichever comes first.

Regarding your Honda - because it's a rev happy engine?  The sevice interval on my bog std 2.0 1995 Accord was every 6000 miles. ( my car needed servicing every 3 mth which was a pain AND expensive!) I think it was when the next facelift came out Honda changed that to every 9000 miles. And when they did change, back then folk were saying EXACTLY the same as folk say about longlife...   the engine will be ruined, it's to cut costs, people don't care about their engines blah blah.  It's quite funny listening to history repeating itself.

Come to think of it, that was a brand new car and from memory the warranty was 1yr or 12k miles.  And people complain about their warranty today! 😂

Ah the good old days. Well in 1994 remember the green (IIRC) service lights going out every 1,400 miles or so on my 325i Coupe meaning an oil change every 7000-7500 miles at £162 a time, 25 years ago remember.:whew:

My Accord's service requirement is 9k/12m intervals, however there's a recommended oil change of every 4.5k as well.

£40 for a bottle of oil and a filter every 5k isn't too bad I thought though.

I've had the thing 12 years and done all servicing myself though... and it's outlived most others and still going.   Screw paying dealers to do things I can do easily.

?

Has anyone like me that has left a rented 2.0TDI 150PS SCR DSG to the Variable Service and used and abused the car ever had the car show it needed the Oil / Service before 18,000 miles when set on 'Variable / flexible'?  (Even when the oil looks like clotted cream in black.)

If going to ASDA to buy oil then you might as well buy ASDA branded VW504 / 507 Spec oil IMO.  Nothing special with Castrol Edge.

Maybe the Oils French or Japaneses Manufactures recommend are a better idea that German Manufacturers do.

German Engines out of Warranty have higher failure rates than other nations according to Warranty Company based Tables published in the Motoring Press,

not that Autocar / Auto Express seem to bother mentioning it.
