Wireless CarPlay

Featured Replies

I'm looking to get a used Skoda Superb mk3, since I've had mk1 and mk2 so it's time for a newer one I think.

I were test driving a car this weekend from 2017 and it seemed that the only way to use CarPlay was thrue USB-cable. I found this article: https://www.skoda-storyboard.com/en/press-releases/wireless-data-flow-from-smartphone-skoda-presents-wireless-mirrorlink/

As I'm scouting the web for my new (used) car before I test drive, how can I tell if it has wireless CarPlay? Or it hasn't been a reality yet? If, from what build date or is it a specific infotainment model?

The facelifted mk3 Superb will b the first Skoda to feature wireless carplay.

The FL mk3 Superb is yet to hit local showrooms.

Not quite true. The Scala is the first to have wireless CarPlay. Wireless CarPlay on the Superb FL will only be available sometime in 2020 (not MY2020) according to the dealer I spoke too.

Exactly. In FL MY2020 there is still wired communication...

My bad - I didn't realise the Scale had wireless carplay.

I wonder if it will support wireless Android Auto when the major update is released soon?

Quick question about android auto... Is there a faster way to return to it after selecting another function, like nav. Seems you have to press menu then scroll to android auto and select it, which is a bit of a faff when driving.

whenever i press the Menu button, Android Auto is always centre of screen - so its a quick touch.  no scrolling required.

If my phone is not connected, it will show SmartLink in the centre, again, no scrolling.

I'd be fine with that but for me the last function pressed is centre screen. So if I've pressed the Nav physical button, it  will be Nav first when pressing Menu. First world problems and all that but is still a tad irritating.

In the settings menu you can change the scroll main screen to a grid. the main functions are all together on the first screen then, with Android auto/Carplay in the top right.

There are ways/adapters which allow the old systems of android auto to be converted wirelessly but they are not officially supported by Skoda .

Have just had a look but can't find this setting anywhere. My Columbus is from '16, has this option been added on since then?

I believe u can only do this with the newer 9.2" non-button Columbus.

No grid option with the button version.

mine is MY17.

I could be wrong, but I can distinctly remember seeing a screenshot with the “old” grayscale buttons laid out in grid array quite some time back, way before the 9,2” screen was available.

I've now had a look at mine, which  is the 9.2" version and its under:  Settings, then Screen and it gives me the choice of grid or scroll.

Thanks for looking. No option on mine unfortunately, will just have to make do.

You have older infotainment system. AFAIK grid is available since newer (MIB2.5)

I had this exact thought, so now I press the PHONE shortcut button. It displays a message on the screen saying phone unavailable due to being connected through CarPlay, and there's a shortcut button straight to CarPlay from there, so 2 button presses from anywhere.

My Superb has the old Columbus tho, mine's a 2016

Thanks, didn't get phone unavailable when pressing PHONE but it's developed a problem with the click wheel, it doesn't move, so have to take it in to get fixed. Will try again when sorted.

Skoda UK have told me the only Superb model currently with wireless carplay is the iV.

For anyone with it are you having a good experience as they say ?

That's somewhat disappointing. I thought I'd read somewhere that the MY20 would come with wireless carplay but reading more it seems it does not

disappointing indeed.

first they said the mk3.5 will get the new MIB3 infotainment which is wireless carplay/android ready.

now it seems that only the iV models will get it first, and then maybe later b available to other mk3.5 models 😞

From a logistics point of view, I doubt it would make sense to make a subdivision within the Superb production line to allow some cars to take the MIB3, and others the MIB2.5. Even though it isn’t based on any evidence, I have a feeling they’d go one way or stay the other for the entire line.

Yeah I checked with Skoda NZ and they said maybe MY21, but they haven’t received much info from HQ

I wonder if there’ll be an opportunity to retrofit wireless CarPlay or not

I’ve been looking at those wireless CarPlay dongles but they all seem a bit rubbish, better of plugging in the phone

There probably has to be small changes else where like perhaps the wiring harness or aerials etc so it's probably not just a simple head unit swap and the iV design due to it being the newest includes these changes and the rest don't
