Is retrofitting a high beam assist (from Golf) worth it?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I could change my stock mirror to a mirror with camera (small camera system) and get me high beam assist.

It would cost about 200€, some wiring and coding, included nulling and restoring one control unit.

Is the Skoda High Beam Assist worth installing?

With that I mean, does it give much value for the effort?

Is it activating properly, is it deactivating properly so noone gets blinded and I wont get blinked on?

Is the system tuneable? Can I set some activation/deactivation thresholds?

Is nulling and restoring (replacing the long coding with zeros, then restore to original/needed value) without problems or could I end up like someone who changed byte 18?

Adding a system not working properly or at least not working satisfyingly would be a nogo for me.

High beam assist is a feature of the AFS 2 system fitted to the Superb when bi-xenon headlamps are specified. Its purpose is to provide halogen backup for the xenon lamp in the high beam setting.

What?

No...

I mean this:

I have the feature in my c Class and love it

I have been interested in doing this for a while but cant justify the price

This tutorial video is made by me. After having it more than one year I can conclude, that HBA works well, it's super comfy and no major problems have accored during that time. Maybe one small issue is with big reflecting traffic signs, as system detects this as passing car and will change main beam to dipped beam. Alltough I'm very happy with this retrofit.

Thank you :)

My take on the camera is it is taking pictures every x seconds, and compares them. If something bright was detected, switch off the high beams.

I guess it is an old system, nothing fancy with AI or self learning stuff. Therefore it could work this way.

Does the HBA switch off reliably when a car approaches you so you dont get blinked?

Does this also work reliably when driving a long straight road and a car pops up in the far distance and gets closer? My concern is the camera would not detect a small steady change in incoming light and therefore would not switch off resulting in blinding the others.

The mirror comes with a control unit, as you added unit 20. What are the bytes in there? Is it somehow adjustable? Can it be made more or less sensitive?

In the video you initialized the mirror and nulled unit 09. Is this doable with OBDEleven too? This would be my only genuine coding tool. I have a clone VCP which might work too, as I can do coding in PQ35 light module.

Yes, I agree this is quite an old system but still it works well. As Superb II has no LED or similar new tech front lights, where lights will shut off specific sectors in LED main beam when car is passing, then this is more than enough.

HBA will switch of immediately, when car approaches, no matter when on curvy roads or long straight road.

Most likely all module electronics are inside the mirror. If I remember correctly, then sensitivity is difficult to change, but you can change speed when HBA is turning on/off.

I have retrofitted it and had a few snags, but it is working now and has been for a while.

You do not have a camera in the rear view mirror, but you get photo sensors that react to white and red light, i.e. head lights and tail lights, which switch the system on and off and you can override the system.

It is a nice toy which does the task of switching the brights on and off for you and it has never been an option on the Superb II. It probably cost me £90 and i did the coding.

Retrofitted a high beam assist mirror today.

Did not work until I nulled unit 9.

After nulling I switched off the ignition....

...

...

Could not start the car. Key not in Range.

...

...

I was sweating bullets.

...

...

Until I realized I had to learn the key again. Then it went on, coded 9 again and deleted all errors.

Then it worked.

The mirror is quite switch off friendly, it quite often switches off where I would not have.

But so far, I like it.

I still have to test the red rear light detection by coming close to another car.

2 questions:

I only found the following things to code:

Min and Max speed, city detection and city setting I believe they were named.

What are the last two doing exactly?

When the high beam assist is active it shows an icon in the dashboard.

Is it possible to turn off the assist without switching to high beam or without switching the light knob from Auto to permanent low beam?

reporting back, I tested some codings of the HBA.

Currently I have this:

Quote

02 01 82 6B 76 76 5D 52 52 20 34 3E 00

It is still a bit too sensitive but less sensitive than the original coding.

It still switches off a bit too early, in curves with shields, but switches off less often.
