Fitting stainless steel bumper strip to Superb III Estate

Featured Replies

Hi All.

New numpty owner of a Sportline 190 4x4 estate here. Anybody fitted the bumper metal protector strip?

Instructions mention all sorts of Terostat adhesives and activators, made by those crafty Germans, applied in two dabs.

Im thinking, really, a bit of regular builder’s silicon will do the job. Or am I missing something? Anyone else done it?

Thanks,

Ben.

Hasn't your protector come with a 3M type strip of double sided tape on the back? Mine did, and I think most do. If not, I think I'd use double sided tape of this kind rather than risk anything else - it also means it can be removed relatively easily at a later stage if you choose to.

Thanks. Yes it does. The instructions mention use of silicon as well, though.

Hi Bejam.  I've fitted two plastic rear guards from "Rearguards".  They both came with two strips of 3M double sided tape already applied.  You positioned the guard, marked it, started to remove the backing from the second side of the tape, the fist side was already stuck to the guard.  Then it was a case of pulling out the tape while holding the guard in position.  Think i remember it saying don't wash it for 7 days or something like that, to let it get a grip.  Neither of them moved a jott.  Just remembered that the surface has to be clean - grease, dirt, polish free.  They came with a wipe to achieve the required solvent clean after a wash.  Anyway, not a hint of silicon in sight.

All you need to do is clean the area (getting off general dirt), then use the special wipes to clean any residue.

The double sided 3M tapes stick easily, take a craft knife and cut backing in the middle, peel off about 3cm to make tabs (of backing) that you can reach and pull, position carefully, then peel backing slowly having made sure it is accurately aligned (you can’t slide it or have a second go), work along pressing down.  Job done.

Thanks all. I was clearly over-thinking it.

Job done. Cheers.

I've used the double sided tape on my Yeti bumper protector, if I was doing it again I would consider adding a bead of sticky silicon close to the edge of the protector to a) ensure a better stick as the dble sided can let go b) stop ingress of dirt and water under the edges which also challenge the grip of the tape.
