Bit of advice...

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Not really Skoda related more general query...

So unfortunately I was involved in an accident on Saturday in my mk7.5 Golf GTi where we had a front drivers side to front drivers side collision (I was only doing 20-25 mph)  😪 all air bags deployed (dash, wheel, footwell, curtain etc...) Fire service also cut the key blade off the key as it was stuck in the barrel!

Fairly sure it will be written off?

But main question, I have a private plate on it..should I be removing it now or when the claims department contact me? (Registered accident but it's a bank holiday so they were closed)

First accident in 15 years of driving so not really sure on the overall process and timescales!

If it is written off I may well be back on here with an Octaiva or Superb! We shall see!

Any help or words of wisdom welcomed!

Cheers.

Dave

Pretty sure you retain the ownership rights to the private plate not the salvage yard or the insurance company if it is written off which sounds likely. On Tuesday I would contact DVLA and ask if you need to move it onto a retention certificate which may cost about £80. It's been some time since I had a personal plate and like you 14 years since I had an accident. Good luck getting the situation sorted and hope you don't have to wait too long until you are mobile again.

Sorry to hear that.

Putting the Personal Plate on retention might be good to be sure no issues needing to do that later, but doing it later is not really that much of a bother and should not cost you any loss on the deal with the insurers.

but,

it will cause all sorts of issues likely as the claim goes on now, the cars Reg now as in the accident etc.      Personally i would leave for now the number and sort that later with the broker and underwriter.

According to the above link, If you get paid pout for a written off car the Private plate becomes the property of the Insurance company, I'd ring up and enquire. ASAP

If the OP is 100% sure about the write off then do as Auric suggests or maybe even get the paperwork done NOW!

Sorry to hear Dave.  Hope everyone was okay.

I've a 7.5 GTI too.  Think cars these days can look pretty mangled without them being written off.  Although the flip side of course is that impact areas and crumple zones are there to take the impact and protect the occupants.

Think I'd heed Auric's advice and get the ball rolling so as to err on the side of caution.

What's the latest @daveface?

I do have this niggly feeling in my head that airbag deployment causes an automatic write off? Though that may also be internet-myth / old information.

Crumple zones are great too, but can lead to massive repair bills - uneconomical repair write off.

I once bought a written of vehicle as salvage to repair, it had a private plate on it and was sold to me with that as its identity on the reciept.

Aside from some further complications where it turned out the seller was a ringer/chopshop and had stolen and ringed another Sierra using the identity of the one that I bought (no V5 or handbook of course) where a Police inspection confirmed that I had the real vehicle, when I came to register it in my name the V5 arrived with the original number plate, the private one had remained the property of the previous insured owner and not the salvage dealer.

@J.R. its missing a chunk of the front grill on passenger side. Like a horizontal post/branch went through it. Could easily have tripped a sensor inside the front end..

In which case... how much damage was done to the engine ancillaries or block..

Something did not behave as planned unless it was yumped, there is nothing in that area rigid enough to transmit enough g force to the airbag controller mounted on top of the transmission tunnel, normally it would require deformation of a chassis rail crumple zone to deploy.

Looks like an easy repair, what is the approx value of a similar undamaged  vehicle?

Update... everything is sorted. The Golf was a total loss 😥 and then spent 2 weeks negotiating with the insurance company about the payout. Ended up getting back what I paid for it minus my excess. I'm sure it will be back on the road in a few months!

As for the number plate Copart called me and asked if I wanted it, which I did so again simply hop onto DVLA and take it off then send paper work to Copart.

Just picked up the new motor...moved to the dark side...a 19-plate BMW 430i Grand Coupe M Sport with 19" M Star spoke alloy wheels 403M and rear sun set glass oh and in Estoril Blue. Lovely car so far!

thanks everyone for the advice!!

You might be leaving the marque but you won't be able to leave the forum. ;)
