unreliable amunsden sat nav

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Is it just me or is the amunsden sat nav full of odd quirks, and as far as I know its gat an up to date map file.

On A roads it likes to try to take me off at most slip roads and back on again so you can never really trust which exit it is that you really need unless you look ahead on the map to see where the route goes next.

Ive also noticed it doesnt have a lot of small villages in it which can be a pain.

It also chooses poor routes , so when driving from calais to south of france this year it decided going through the centre of paris was the best option!

Doea anyone else have the same problems, google maps seems miles better.

Thanks

Which route setting do you have it on, shortest, faster or most environmentally?

Agree its pretty much useless, and why deliver a brand new car with map data that is already years out of date?

Don't know if the Columbus shares the same map data as the Amunsden - I certainly cannot fault that.

I always select the "Red Route" as it keeps me on main roads rather than the "as crow flies" and taking you down wild country roads.

Sure it's missing things like the current A14 works, however other than that everything has been bang up to date.

If they don't share the same mapping data, shame they cannot keep them both as "up to date" as one another.

I didn't find it to be particularly great on my FL, I switched to CarPlay pretty much immediately. Only thing I miss slightly is directions not showing on the maxidot.

Struggle to fault it in mine, no bizarre behaviour like coming off and back on to the same roads or 'keeping right' past laybys, the split screen view with next 3 directions is good, it gets me where I need to go.

The only thing lacking is proper online traffic without having to pay Skoda £44 a year for the privilege.

Waze is my backup if expecting heavy traffic but connecting a phone via USB stops it having 2 phones connected via Bluetooth, so I prefer to use the built in Nav to keep both phones connected.

Agree with Kenai- traffic updates rubbish but the routes are good, I normally choose the red route....

Cant fault mine either ,never let me down

To get the best out of it, turn dynamic routing off, this is what often what takes people off at slip roads etc. As for map data, the Columbus and Amundsen map data is different. I didn’t find the Amundsen bad but the Columbus is a lot better.

What's dynamic routing? Doesn't that allow the route to be recalculated as you are driving according to traffic conditions? Surely you would want to leave this

on so that you don't end up sat in a massive traffic jam?

Or is it something else altogether?  I've not got the manual to hand as I'm at work so I don't have a clue what I'm talking about!

It’s meant to, but it often just routes you over slip roads and the traffic data is way out as it’s all FM based. For live traffic you’ll need an internet connected nav system.

Exactly.

Dynamic routing uses TMC which is carried on various FM transmitters in the same way as the RDS data. The real problem with TMC is that the data appears to be manually updated so it can often be hours, days or in rare cases months out of date (my personal record is being rerouted to avoid road works that had finished over a year before!) - which means dynamic routing will try to make you avoid a problem that no longer exists.

How do you get the sat nav to use an internet connection or is that a different system/service from Skoda?

I can enable a hot-spot on my phone and the internet connection turns green on the car display, but does this in any way assist the sat nav?

Only if you have the £44 per year Infotainment Online subscription as a minimum

I thought my last 2 trips to London were a bit long winded as I ended up in horrendous traffic on both occasions around Birmingham.

Time for Google Maps I guess.
