Tyres

Featured Replies

I'm sure I've read a discussion on here about the best tyres for a Fabia, but I'm having trouble with the search and can't find it. Can anyone point me in the right direction or recommend anything now I've finally worn out the original set?

Thanks.

Maybe it is in the Tyre Section.

What size wheels are on your car?  & what tyres are on now?

I haven't checked the actual car but from googling I believe they're 215/45 R16. It's a colour edition, 2016. 🙂

I did have a look at that. I'm looking for something long lasting and with decent all round grip, not worried about sportiness. Low noise would be nice. I switched front to back at the MOT and now am hearing road noise I never did before. 😀

Are the tyres Directional or asymmetrical?

If they are asymmetrical then you might be able to swap them from side to side.

This can help with noise from tyres if they have worn unevenly.

I don't think they are directional? I checked this morning and can't remember now if it was the fronts or backs that need replacing very soon. If it was the fronts then that should help the noise, if not I'll ask them about switching them when I get the new ones.

It tends to be the inside edge on the rear tyres that can produce noise.

Directional tyres fitted the wrong way round also can produce noise.

added directional bit.

@Eeeekkk

Worn fronts moved to the back are not always a good idea if they are pretty worn, and Fabia rears can take a shape on the rear and are not always that good even if plenty tread when put on the front.

Then there is the pressures to set.

Changing tyres that way can change the noise.

?

What is the Brand / name of tyres on the car just now?

The garage changed them at MOT so I assumed it was done properly and havent had a moment to go ask them about it. I think I'm close to needing all four changing as I've done 46k miles, so maybe I should just think about changing them all?  Just went out in the rain to look, I think it says Dunlop SP Sportmax.

They are asymmetric not directional then.

They must be very different from the Sport Maxx i used to run in summer on my Fabia vRS, i liked them for grip but the sidewalls were dead weak and i never had them on for more than 8,000 miles or so before they were wrecked. They were at the right pressures, just used hard.

I don't drive hard, and do a fair few motorway miles so I guess there's less corners. 😀

I've seen a couple of people recommending the Falken all season tyres, does anyone use them, or is there anything better in that sort of price range?

Davanti DX 390

Avon ZV7

neither are particularly expensive, both are pretty quiet, and both are really grippy (and have good wet grip and fuel economy), i havent had mine too long (5-10k ish) so i cant tell for longevity.

@FabiaGonzales

Have you one make on the front and another on the rear or is this on different cars?

You can take or leave Tyre Reviews, maybe with a pinch of salt, but this on the Davanti DX 390 is pretty bad.   Not really much like even an All Season / Summer tyre.

I used Avon winter tyres this past winter, and the ZV7 are certainly worth considering.

Davanti on front, Avons rear.

At first with the davantis one of the tyres was "out of round" but that was resolved by the fitters who changed the culprit for another tyre of the same

Have you not had more ASR / TC light flashing in the wet from junctions with them on?

Personally i have the best tyres on the front of FWD cars, i like to be able to get traction, braking / traction, and steering traction.

I know people say the back end can go out but then ESP can deal with that or i can if i have steering and braking and traction.

How old are your current tyres, I ask because recently changed rear tyres on our roomster and lot quieter now, I'm sure older tyres rumble more especially if getting old, and hard and starting to show cracks.

To check the age, there is a 4 digit date code, will look something like 3715

First 2 are week number (1-52), second 2 are year

so this example is week 37 (September) 2015

If you don't do sporty driving, put the best tyres on driving wheels on front, as unlikely to be flinging the back out.

Now have Bridgestone A005 all seasons (but keep them at lower pressure, not fully laden as have XL sidewalls), outstanding in the wet, superb grip.   Front were changed last Autumn (due to a puncture), rears have just been changed (one of those on rear was an original 2012 tyre  which was cracking).  Happily ran for 10 months with new all seasons on front, and old summer tyres on back , and no problems.

Was in Devon in December and went up a 1 in 5 hill on a farm lane during rainstorm with a river of muddy field runoff pouring down the hill, couldn't see any road between the hedges as so much water, not slightest slippage which shows how good the A005s are.   So very good for grip.   Can't say how long they will last as not old enough.

If i floor it then yes the TC light does flash up, interestingly though braking performance is nearly identical. They don't seem to care about standing water either.

I'm not so keen on the Davantis and i find the Avons are better tbh. Though the Davantis are still a lot better than the bridgestones, they were noisy hard and not very grippy.

Dunlop SP Sport Maxx 215/55 R17 98W Tyres

Dunlop SP Sport Maxx could be either.

When I looked at them again they do have arrows on! It was raining yesterday when I first looked.

So are they pointing in the right direction?

Thanks AG Falco

Yes 🙂

And do the inside edges have a sawtooth pattern to them?

Thanks AG Falco
