Just a modified car.

Those were the changes made to the 245 by Skoda, not after market modifications.

  • This could be summarised slightly easier.   The most powerful engines in both cars are 2.0 petrol turbos producing around 240bhp.   The Mondeo weighs 200kg more than the Octavia.

  • Cough*** K Series Head Gasket ***Cough

  • Mondeo's used to be great to drive, but the latest one is a world car and is built for cruising comfort which doesn't suit the European market as well.   Saying that some of the extra weight

He doesn't understand the major advances from the 230 to the 245 hence my suggestion for him to try the 2017 face lift model. However I don't think he likes the 4 LED headlights anyway.:)

Yes I agreed with the reviewers.

Mk1, 2, 3, and 4 Ford Europe Mondeo's were great.

The Global/World Mk5 Mondeo was just another large saloon hatch so you may as well go for a Passat/Superb.

Bit odd. So the Mondeo has reduced its drive to the standard if a Passat or Superb, why should would you then automatically go for the Passat or Superb ? I wouldn’t go for any of them!

Numerous cars before them. Only Skoda would have been a VRS but not now.  I’ve had Passat’s, lets just say slightly uninspiring cars.  If I had to take one of those cars in mainstream models it would still be the Mondeo by a margin. But I don’t so  it would be none of them.

As pointed out in the 5th Gear film when the Fusion was launched here 5 years ago it had already been on sale in the U.S. for 3 years so it's now an 8 year old car which is reflected in the interior infotainment and general quality.;)

Ok but I much prefer the looks of the pfl 230 and didn’t have any issues with the handling really. Slightly Numb steering like all vag and slightly soggy suspension for a hot hatch. But bonus was good comfort. And mine wasn’t crashy or unrefined as some say. Yes some cheap  plastic and trim but I knew that  getting a Skoda.

I drove the 245 when it first came out and honestly couldn’t feel much if any difference. Was auto which spoiled it for me but made me content with my car.

Rubbish. Interior and sync 3 is more than a match for skoda. It’s only been out in this  country a couple of years and us constantly updated.

You lot live in your Skoda cocoon. Enjoy👍

Because when the Mk5 was released and I was looking for another Mondeo the driving experience was no better than the Passat. The interior quality was nowhere near the Passat, the Passat had more kit, was more refined on the motorway and most importantly I would see back more of my £30k outlay in three years time.

The earlier Mondeo's sales held up because they drove so well. Now that's gone the Mondeo can't compete and will soon die and that's a real shame.

Were they 'Major'? Mate of mine has one and alongside @teescom09 I also felt very little difference from when mine used to be standard. Except the 245's standard ARBs did feel stiffer in cornering, but then it doesn't have the VAQ diff, so - compromises.

Avoiding the clearly felt passions in this thread, my original point wasn't actually that by modding the car you're getting back to the old 90s days (not that I could drive back then, as I was more concerned with Batman and biscuits - tbf, not much different now!) - but actually just making the car closer to your own personal requirements & taste. Which is 'personal' and therefore unlikely to resonate 100% with others :)

Mondeo ST220's still turn my head whenever I spot them and were pretty cool, but have since been outclassed by generally bigger hatchbacks and a different market focus from Ford

Either way, my old Fiesta S had 1000% more involving chassis and steering feel than my Octy... but they both put a smile on my face for different reasons.

Well the Chairman aka Auric Goldfinger has owned both the 230 and the 245 and he swears the 245 is better so I will leave it there. His number plate sums it up nicely BE57 VRS.:tongueout:

Erm... There is no version of the 245 vRS without the VAQ diff 🤔

Skoda Skoda!

Sync 3 more than a match? Are you smoking something??? The infotainment in all of the VAG cars is superior to all other systems. I regularly spend time in a Mercedes Gl, range rover sport, jag xf and Volvo XC60 (my directors selection of cars!) And even he says none are as good as the vag system. I spent alot of time in the Ford and it just doesn't compare! The screen was slow, graphics poor and the menus badly arranged. The skoda or even my last golf was better in every single way.

Just for the record, I dont hate fords. I've had a few and so has the wife but if you look at the OP, it was mondeo vs Octavia. Either my Octavia vrs punches above its weight or the mondeo is massively underperforming

Ahh but you are mistaken... In the parallel universe of teescom09, if you don't own the car it never happened. Or at least that's BS he tried with me when I didn't agree with him earlier in this thread.

It may be easier to just conclude that different people want different things.

The Mondeo is apparently nicer as a cruiser, the Octavia is certainly quicker and cheaper from new. Both are good family cars and both are non premium marques.

Ultimately they have both sold a lot of cars in the UK over the last 15 years and that says good things about them both.

Nobody is right or wrong, they just see things from a different angle.

I've driven long distances in many cars and to date the most comfortable and enjoyable of them for me is my Type R accord.

In all honesty I'd take a civic type r as a daily car and a mile muncher over either the Mondeo or the Octavia..  I just didn't have that extra £10k to throw in the pot.  Plus it doesn't look great.

I would imagine most would disagree but that doesn't make me wrong, it just means my version of a good drive is different to others.

That was kind the point I was trying to make earlier about consumerism and that the average buying Joe punter can only comment on what they have knowledge/experience of themselves. As you say Alex-W there is no right or wrong answer here just differences of opinion hence why we're not all driving around model T's in any Colour as long as it's black.

Infotainment is decent enough in the Mk3 Octavia for the price point but the Audio quality is pretty poor. A major disappointment for me. I thought they would improve on the Mk2 but it's a step backwards.

I got Canton in mine. It's not the loudest but pretty good sound quality.

Mine had standard speakers but expensive Columbus upgrade with DVD and HDD and would play FLAC on SD-Card. My works van has audio with more depth.

Yeah my last vrs had the standard system and it was great. Canton is certainly an upgrade worth having

Ah, then I think I got confused between 2 convos I was having with a 220 owner and my mate (who seemed to think the diff didn't do the job as he hooned across roundabouts) 👍

Ta for correction @Kenai

He must be right then or not. I will make my own mind up. Fact is both are dated and new model can't come soon enough. If they get the looks of the new one right , give it at least 280hp and sharpen the handling up it will be as good as ever.

If you do the eq on it it's pretty good. Those standard eq us hopeless, not the audio system.

Autocar still rate the current Mondeo as one of the best of its type . If I was to allow a mag to influence me (which I don't) that one would be up there.  They pretty much match my opinion of the Skoda models too.

Passat , yawn yawn.
